Weapons Receives a Surprising PGA Nomination Over Wicked and Avatar Sequels

Weapons is One Step Closer to an Oscar Nod for Best Picture

Weapons surprisingly received a PGA (Producers Guild of America) nomination for Outstanding Theatrical Picture over some pretty fierce competition.

This year has proven to be a very successful one for horror films. Not only is Sinners leading the pack of movies set to be nominated for major awards at the Oscars, but the other big scary 2025 movie, Weapons, just received a PGA nomination for Outstanding Theatrical Motion Picture over movies that seemed like sure bets for nods such as Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ash.

It seems 2025 was a year in film that the PGA decided to reward more for its originality than for its popularity. Ariana Grande may have belted out the song “Popular” in last year’s Wicked movie, but this year, her sequel was a lot less popular than it should have been with the Producers Guild of America. James Cameron may have made an epic third Avatar movie, but the PGA wasn’t buying it this time around. Both Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ash may face an uphill battle to secure Academy Award nominations for Best Picture.

Bugonia also made the PGA’s cut as a “10 best movie” of 2025. Now, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are, themselves, looking more “popular” than ever in the awards circuits and could just take home acting nominations in their respective categories at the Oscars for their daring new picture from director Yorgos Lanthimos. F1: The Movie also looks Oscar-bound as well and that’s something that was totally unexpected. Yes, it’s one of the best movies of the year and a summer action blockbuster, but to see it rewarded by the PGA is truly a wonderful surprise, to say the least.

One Battle After Another and Sinners are probably the only two movies that stand a chance to win Best Picture at the Oscars this year, but it’s a diverse field of nominees this year with some compelling films that weren’t guaranteed to make the PGA’s cut shining through. Amy Madigan’s bravura supporting turn in the Magnolia-inspired Weapons certainly propelled Weapons to get its honor as a nominated film by the PGA.

Other movies nominated for “outstanding movie” by the PGA were Train Dreams, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and the terrific Sentimental Value which some thought may be shut out at the Oscars. Not likely. The Bad Guys 2 received a nod for Best Animated Movie from the PGA proving FilmBook wasn’t alone in praising the highly enjoyable Sam Rockwell-led sequel. Zootopia 2 looks like the potential winner of that animated award from the PGA unless Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters pulls an upset. That Netflix animated picture has already won the Critics Choice award and could go all the way in its category all throughout the awards season.

Weapons, meanwhile, stands beside Sinners as a truly stellar 2025 horror picture or just a truly stellar movie, period. Other movies snubbed for a PGA nod for “Outstanding Movie” include Jay Kelly and Is This Thing On?
