Lindsey Anderson Beer Would Like to See Her THE WIZARD OF OZ Sequel Come Into Fruition

Judy Garland Plus Co The Wizard Of Oz

Writer Hopes Her The Wizard of Oz Sequel Gets Made

Lindsey Anderson Beer has written a script for a The Wizard of Oz sequel which she is very proud of and hopes to get it turned into a movie.

It isn’t easy to get a movie made in Hollywood, but if it’s a sequel to arguably the most cherished family film of all-time, The Wizard of Oz, then it could, indeed, happen one day. Writer Lindsey Anderson Beer surely hopes so given the hard work she put into that project. Beer seems to believe she has set the correct tone for a would-be sequel to 1939’s family-themed masterpiece. Also on Beer’s slate of upcoming projects is a Sleepy Hollow reworking as well.

While many critics and audiences didn’t care too much for Beer’s recent Pet Sematary: Bloodlines prequel, it’s hard to sneeze at the ambition of the projects that Beer has on her upcoming agenda. The problem, according to Beer, is that movies can sometimes take “a decade to 20 years” to get made. Beer claims her The Wizard of Oz sequel is dark, but also whimsical and appropriate for modern-day audiences.

Judy Garland was Dorothy, the lead character in the 1939 classic, and since that old film, which came out 84 years ago, others have attempted to rekindle its magic with OK, but certainly not stellar, results. A prequel called Oz the Great and Powerful from 2013 failed to win over the majority of critics but was a financial success with $234 million in domestic ticket sales and another $258 million in international sales. If a great Oz picture were to come out, then those box-office numbers could be significantly increased.

Before that prequel, 1978’s The Wiz spun the source material in a different way and had a cast that included Michael Jackson and Diana Ross but only mustered up $21 million at the box-office. It still seems audiences are ready for an accessible, modern sequel to The Wizard of Oz but when, exactly, it will come into production is anybody’s guess at this particular point in time.

Beer’s Sleepy Hollow spin-off promises to be more faithful to its own 1820 source material than the 1999 Johnny Depp/Tim Burton project was. Beer believes it’s going to be a “fun one” with its “true ghost stories from the Hudson Valley.”

While Beer’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is pretty close to the top on 2023’s worst movies list for me, one must admire Beer’s persistence and dedication to bringing originality to past literary works she plans to adapt to the screen. I’d like nothing more than to praise her next project and forget the Pet Sematary film altogether. it would be great to see that The Wizard of Oz sequel actually happen, although it somewhat feels like a lot will be entailed for that project to actually move forward.
