Martin Scorsese Set to Make Another Film About Jesus

Oscar-winning filmmaker, Martin Scorsese, has written a movie about Jesus which he plans on making after his success at Cannes with Killers of the Flower Moon.

The great Martin Scorsese has revealed that his next project will be a film about Jesus. This information was revealed as the director made his way to Italy after Cannes. Scorsese’s upcoming movie is a response to the Pope’s “appeal to artists.” This is not the first time the high-profile director has made a religious picture. in 2016, Scorsese directed a tale of two priests from Portugal called Silence. His more controversial and widely known (and highly charged) religious project, however, was The Last Temptation of Christ from 1988.

In 1997, Scorsese made a movie about the religious leader, the Dalai Lama, called Kundun which was one of the director’s more personal projects. Scorsese’s religious projects are not his biggest box-office hits domestically. Silence earned a mere $7 million in the United States and Canada. Kundun fared even worse with just $5 million. The Last Temptation of Christ made $8 million back in 1988 but, since, there has been a widening interest in religious pictures as evidenced by Mel Gibson’s smash, The Passion of the Christ from 2004.

Scorsese has grown as a filmmaker since the 1988 Christ picture. The director won his Oscar (finally!) for his work on 2006’s smash hit, The Departed. “Can you double check the envelope?” Scorsese hilariously asked when his name was called at the Academy Awards.

Martin Scorsese told the editorial director of The Catholic Civilization about his desire to make another religious picture. He also discussed how violence has played a role in his life and in his art. Violence was a big part of his early film career which made it a surprise to all when he made The Last Temptation of Christ which was a huge departure from his previous work. It will be interesting to see where Scorsese picks up his story in his new “Jesus” project. Catholicism is of great interest to the renowned director and all eyes will be on the latest religious project from him.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Scorsese has become more of a box-office draw of late than when he first rose to fame in the 1970’s and 1980’s. It is possible his latest religious movie about Jesus could do a nice chunk of business at the box-office if a major studio eventually deems it a potentially lucrative film. It could also go straight to streaming. Time will tell. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for Scorsese’s Oscar bait, Killers of the Flower Moon.
