Rose Byrne to Make Sports Drama with Mary Bronstein Directing

Rose Byrne will be featured in Nasty, a sports drama featuring Jenna Ortega and helmed by Byrne‘s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You filmmaker, Mary Bronstein.

Mary Bronstein helmed a masterpiece last year, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.That film was so brilliant due to the 1-2 sucker punch the movie offered audiences at the conclusion, but also because of the terrific work of Rose Byrne, the film’s star. Byrne and Bronstein will be working together again on Nasty, a new sports drama showcasing Byrne and Jenna Ortega.

Nasty will be produced through Warner Bros. Clockwork, an independent film division of Warner Bros. This upcoming film will revolve around a young athlete’s bond with her coach which ultimately turns out to be her biggest obstacle to success. This athlete strives for excellence on an Olympics gymnastics team, yet finds the coach is holding her back from achieving all that she can be in her chosen area of specialization.

Penned by Isabella Jarosz, the new Bronstein movie will be a true test to see if the filmmaker and Byrne can re-capture the magic they created with the dark, ferocious and undeniably furious, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. That will not be an easy feat considering how intense their last film was and how wonderfully it was received by film critics across the nation last year.

Jenna Ortega will offer a very fascinating performance in the film’s most pivotal role. Ortega has been waiting for a challenging role for some time. Playing Wednesday Addams, and appearing in movies in the Beetlejuice and Scream franchises haven’t made her truly test her acting chops to the level where they should be tested. Ortega is capable of great things and in Bronstein’s hands, it is likely she could come up with the most intelligent and proficient performance of her career in Nasty.

Rose Byrne is a seasoned screen veteran who has appeared in many great films, most recently Bronstein’s aforementioned modern classic, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and the drama, Tow, which played at last year’s Tribeca festival. Byrne is flexible in that she can go back and forth between comedy and drama with tremendous ease, making her one of the most accomplished working actresses today. She also recently appeared on Broadway in the comical Fallen Angels.

Nasty looks like it could have serious Oscar potential and will be released in 2027. Byrne and Bronstein automatically make it a curiosity piece, but the inclusion of Ortega and a finely conceived premise help advance it to the type of prestige project that smart film-goers keep their eyes on very closely.
