New York Comic Con 2025 Day Three – IT: Welcome to Derry Panel Write Up

The fun thing with Stephen King’s material is they’re all basically connected in one way or another, so fans from every dark corner that his work resides in came out to the panel for HBO’s new show. To his credit, King’s bar for talent stands above just about any writer’s you will come across. Needless to say, his fans represent. And after all, this is October in New York.

The panel was enormous. Ten creators took the stage (six actors and four producers) to reveal a new trailer for the horror TV series premiering on October 26. The series maintains that slick, glossy premier television look even in the face of its horrific subject matter. As director, EP Andy Muschietti answered during the panel that the show aims to tell the story backwards but gave no explanation why.

“You have to watch.” He said with a smile.

In the case of such a large panel, it can be difficult to navigate the questioning, but moderator Perri Nemiroff did a sound job running things smoothly. Executive producer Barbara Muschietti explained that this series will take place approximately twenty-seven years before the events in IT. Since the original story established that Pennywise the clown (or whatever kind of intergalactic demon that is behind him) returns to Derry every twenty-seven years.

A lot of the behind-the-scenes producers had already worked on previous IT projects. Like Jason Fuchs, who is a writer on IT: Welcome to Derry and worked on IT: Chapter 2 described being asked to be a part of the new show by Muschietti in the Warner Brothers parking lot. “Life-changing thing to spring on somebody on the way from the car.”

It was a delight for genre fans to see James Remar take the stage in New York. Probably best known for playing Dexter Morgan’s father on the smash hit, Dexter, Remar starred in films like The Warriors (which had a booth celebrating its 45th anniversary), Drugstore Cowboy, and Cruising, to name a few. He was sitting around collecting his pension and social security when the phone call for IT: Welcome to Derry came through.

When he met with Andy and Barbra Muschietti about the part, he saw a big Pennywise statue in the room and proclaimed, “I’ve made it!”

Actor Jovan Adepo, who plays Leroy Hanlon on the show, proclaimed his excitement to play a young Black man who is truly exceptional. A major in the military, Hanlon, described his character as someone deeply devoted to finding a better life for his family.

The panel ended with a Red Band trailer that really gave the audience a taste of things to come. And of course, a glimpse at everyone’s favorite clown, Pennywise.
