OH. WHAT. FUN.: Actor/Comedian Denis Leary Joins Talented Cast of Upcoming Comedy From Amazon/MGM

1990’s Character Actor Denis Leary Joins New Comedy

Denis Leary has come aboard director Michael Showalter‘s forthcoming holiday comedy from Amazon/MGM titled Oh. What. Fun.

Denis Leary, who got his start as a comedian, was a staple in 1990’s movies and played a slew of character roles in various big screen star vehicles during that decade. After doing several assorted television appearances, Leary is back in the movies again playing opposite Michelle Pfeiffer in Oh. What. Fun. Pfieffer and Leary are part of an ensemble cast which includes Felicity Jones, Dominic Sessa and Chloe Grace Moretz.

While Leary was given the opportunity to be a leading man in the little scene gem, The Ref, back in 1994, the actor also played the love interest for eventual Oscar winner Sandra Bullock in Two if By Sea from 1996. Those films didn’t perform so well at the box-office nor did Leary’s turn in the action picture, Judgment Night, from 1993. Still, Leary went on to play supporting roles in great independent movies like 1997’s The Matchmaker and 1998’s The Real Blonde. His career continued into the 2000’s.

The news of his casting (after a ten year absence from films) is particularly bright for Leary when considering the talent involved with Oh. What. Fun. This film’s director is Michael Showalter who directed Jessica Chastain to an Oscar win for her work in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. A few years before that, the filmmaker made the wonderful comedy, The Big Sick. Leary is alongside some great company considering the talent involved in this new picture. The acclaimed character actor is poised to make a comeback and if he were to get back into movies, Leary’s fans would certainly be ecstatic.

In Oh. What. Fun., Michelle Pfeiffer plays Claire who gets together with family for Christmas and through a series of events, ends up getting lost in the chaos. Hilarity will most likely ensue as Claire vows to make magical memories for her family. It sort of sounds like a variation on some of the themes found in Home Alone when considering that Pfeiffer’s character gets forgotten about in the middle of it all.

Leary will be playing Pfeiffer’s husband in a genius stroke of casting that will most likely bode well for laughs. Leary can do both comedy and drama to equal degrees of success. When Leary was in his prime, he made the television show, “Rescue Me.” That series went on to receive many accolades from both critics and the show’s viewers.

I first saw the talented Leary performing as a comedian at a private event for the New York Mets in the early 1990’s. I was just a teenager then but remember being impressed by his comic persona and incredible timing. His role in Oh. What. Fun. is certain to bring him back to the cinematic limelight for those who remember how entertaining he was as a performer.
