PAST LIVES (2023): Celine Song’s Emotionally Moving Gem Has Scored Several Gotham Award Nominations

Past Lives Among Gotham Award Nominees

Past Lives has scored several Gotham Award nominations which helps position the film as a strong contender for future Academy Award nominations.

Greta Lee delivered a performance in this year’s Past Lives which will move audiences to tears. It is only appropriate that the Gotham nominations have included the great actress in their list of nominees for Outstanding Lead Performance. She is in some competitive company, however, with the likes of Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) who may be the likely front-runner for Best Actress come Oscar time. Also, on the list for “Outstanding Lead Performance” is the potential Oscar nominee for Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone, for a movie called The Unknown Country. Joining these heavy-hitters are the terrific Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One), Michelle Williams for Showing Up (which may not hit the right notes to make it into the Oscar race) and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction. All bets are on as to who is going home with this award.

Past Lives also managed to receive Gotham nods for Breakthrough Director (Celine Song) and Best Feature. It is highly improbable that another A24 film will dominate the Oscars next year as Everything Everywhere All at Once did this year but it could happen if the superlative quality of Past Lives overrides all possible obstacles to victory.

Elsewhere on the Gotham awards forefront, All of Us Strangers had a strong performance with a couple of seriously prestigious nominations. However, it is the supporting performance category that has people buzzing. There are some huge names on that list like Penelope Cruz (Ferrari), Claire Foy (All of Us Strangers), Ryan Gosling (for Barbie, of course), and the biggest surprise: Rachel McAdams for Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Gosling’s performance in Barbie was able to get into the race thanks to the lift on budgetary restrictions for the Gotham awards. FilmBook ran an article a couple of weeks ago that suggested McAdams could get some love this awards season and that theory looks like a real possibility now. Of course, the likely supporting performance winner will be Oscar front runner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, for her work in The Holdovers (which FilmBook will review later in the week).

The Gotham Awards were full of interesting nominations that were peculiar but nevertheless intriguing. Jamie Foxx got nominated for “Outstanding Supporting Performance” in They Cloned Tyrone! Big surprise, there. Past Lives is a film that many will be rooting for come Oscar time. It has won the hearts of viewers who have seen it and they will be standing in the film’s corner every step of the way. Also of note was a nomination for Anatomy of a Fall for Best International Feature which could lose to All of Us Strangers or Poor Things but still deserves much respect for garnering that prestigious nod.
