Cailee Spaeny Nabs Best Actress Golden Globe Nomination for Priscilla

Cailee Spaeny earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress (Drama) for her work in Priscilla in a year with many fine performances and she is among a surprising list of nominees.

Cailee Spaeny received a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla in a Best Actress (Drama) list that also includes the great Greta Lee of the film, Past Lives, which, itself, earned several nominations. In a year of great performances, it is a testament to the fine work of both actresses that they made the cut. Other Best Actress (Drama) nominees include Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Annette Bening (Nyad) and Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall).

It was a competitive year for actresses but Spaeny carried the film, Priscilla, in such a way that her inclusion in a list of the best female lead performances of the year was almost guaranteed. However, the film she starred in, has been met with some mixed reactions by critics which dropped its Rotten Tomatoes score down to the current 82% approval rating it holds. This may hurt the film’s chances at Oscar nominations other than Spaeny for Best Actress.

Greta Lee delivered another breakout performance in the brilliant, Past Lives, which was recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press in categories such as Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director (Celine Song). However, in a stunning turn of events, Lee’s male co-star, John Magaro, was snubbed for Best Supporting Actor. He seemed to be a shoo-in for a nod given his very crucial role in the Golden Globe nominated (for Best Screenplay) story line of Past Lives.

Magaro wasn’t the only great supporting performance snubbed by the Golden Globes. Penelope Cruz didn’t get nominated for her terrific work in the upcoming Ferrari and America Ferrera got snubbed for her performance in the hit, Barbie, which scored well elsewhere in Golden Globes categories.

On the plus side, the critically acclaimed, Air made it into the Golden Globes with a Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) nomination and a nod for Matt Damon for Best Actor (Musical or Comedy), but that film’s co-star, Viola Davis, was unfairly snubbed for Best Supporting Actress as well.

While A24’s Priscilla may have to settle for technical Oscar nods (such as costume design and/or makeup/hair styling) and, of course, a hopeful nomination for Spaeny, herself, 2023 was a brilliant year for movies. Other A24 movie performances such as those from Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario) and Joaquin Phoenix (Beau is Afraid) made the cut for Best Actor (Comedy). A24 has proven to be a movie studio whose films consistently receive awards recognition as evidenced by this set of nominations and the ones the company had garnered for its pictures last year as well.
