Sofia Coppola to Reteam with A24 for New Priscilla Presley Biopic

Sofia Coppola has written a script for an upcoming A24 film project titled Priscilla which the acclaimed Coppola will also direct.

Oscar-winner for Best Original Screenplay (for the 2003 masterpiece, Lost in Translation), Sofia Coppola, is returning to filmmaking for a movie based on the life of Priscilla Presley. While Elvis is one of the movies to beat for major awards that has been released so far this year, the film gave us just a glimpse inside the personal life of Priscilla Presley. Now, Coppola will be looking at famous events through the love of Elvis’s life, Priscilla’s eyes.

There’s even better news. The wonderful actress from 2021’s hysterical How it Ends, Cailee Spaeny, is going to be playing Priscilla Presley. Spaeny definitely made the 2021 comedy How it Ends a movie worth seeing as it was absolutely enjoyable thanks to her fine work in the picture. It will be interesting to see her assume a high-profile dramatic role such as this one. Meanwhile, Jacob Elordi, will be playing Elvis. Given Austin Butler’s work as Elvis this year, Elordi (“Euphoria”) has some pretty big shoes to fill. We’ll see if he’s going to be able to hold a candle to Butler. This project is going to be based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir, Elvis and Me.

A24 has worked with Coppola before, having released two of her earlier films, The Bling Ring from 2013 and 2020’s On the Rocks. While The Bling Ring remains one of Coppola’s less successful films from a critical and financial standpoint, it’s undeniable that Emma Watson was fun in the film about some young thieves who robbed celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. On the Rocks reunited Coppola with her star from the brilliant Lost in Translation, Bill Murray. Although On the Rocks was a pretty good movie, it got lost because of the pandemic in terms of appearing on many big screens for a theatrical release though it did nicely when it went on streaming.

Lost in Translation has been Coppola’s definitive masterpiece so far, but Priscilla has a lot of potential. Coppola could bring her unique talents to the story of the former wife of Elvis so well that the movie could be one of A24’s biggest hits. Elvis has been a tremendous success at the box-office and audiences are still eager to learn more about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s wife. There’s plenty of passion and drama in the relationship that existed between Elvis and Priscilla so this film will be one to watch.

Remember that although Coppola’s presence on this project is exciting, it is also a picture that is giving the absolutely brilliant actress Spaeny a chance to shine bright in a potential hit. The combination of two of the best female talents working in film and a studio that always takes huge risks (and usually succeeds) should lead to one of the most talked about movies of the year the film ends up being released in.
