Sofia Coppola brings Luke Humphrey on board for her latest venture, adapting Priscilla Presley’s  tell-all about her turbulent time with the King. Humphrey presumably portrays fine artist Terry A. King, who created a popular collage-style lithograph of Elvis at various periods of his life.

Like Ms. Coppola, Luke Humphrey was born into the world of acting in Los Angeles, where accomplished Canadian actors Mark Humphrey and Wendel Meldrum had already forged successful careers of their own. Blessed from the start with guy-next-door good looks, Luke was just shy of eighteen years old when he starred in his first production with his parents in a family drama, Cruel but Necessary, penned by Meldrum herself.

Since then Mr. Humphrey has distinguished himself in a number of television series as well as in stage productions at the Stratford Festival. Luke’s most recent triumph is the World War I horror story, Trench 11. He took a best actor award as male lead John Wayne Bobbitt in the TV movie, I Was Lorena Bobbitt. He played opposite lead female award winner Dani Montalvo as Lorena.

Ms. Coppola certainly has a flair for adaptation; in fact, one reviewer bestowed the rare praise that the film (The Virgin Suicides) was better than the book. Putting aside the debate among critics regarding nepotism, or the ratio of blessings to burdens as a member of such an esteemed dynasty in film culture, Ms. Coppola manages time and again to assemble top-notch filmmaking teams. For example, Cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd (The Beguiled) and editor Sarah Flack (Lost in Translation) are working with her again on this one. And how closely Ms. Presley herself will work with the team to bring her tome to life can’t help but be the stuff of speculation.

The cadre of talented actors in her productions amounts to nearly a repertory group thus far, but there is a brace of new talents working on Priscilla. Mr. Humphrey makes an admirable addition to this, in terms of both talent and looks. Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) plays Elvis, Emily Mitchell (Women Talking) as daughter Lisa Marie, R. Austin Ball (The Last Day) as Larry Geller, Jorja Cadence (Reacher) as Patsy Presley, and Ari Cohen (It) as Captain Beaulieu. Interestingly, Ms. Coppola has selected relative newcomer Cailee Spaeny (On the Basis of Sex) for the crucial role of Priscilla.

Priscilla is currently filming, and while no release date has yet been given, A24 is set to distribute.
