Paul Schrader Set to Receive Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement

Acclaimed writer/director Paul Schrader is going to be honored with the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Paul Schrader has always been one of the most unique talents working in motion pictures dating back to his scripts for films such as Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Throughout the years, Schrader has always proven that he is a master of his craft with film after film winning over movie critics and fans of his unique directorial style which was so evident in his most recent work. Now, the great artist, Schrader, will be accepting the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 79th Venice Film Festival which is happening from August 31st through September 10th.

Most recently, Schrader wowed his fans and movie critics with The Card Counter, a powerful, deep movie that showed the life of a man who has been imprisoned for vicious crimes which he engaged in at a prison during the time period surrounding 9/11. Schrader’s film offered much complexity as, through the film, we learn the real reasons he was sentenced to jail for those aforementioned wrongdoings. Oscar Isaac starred in the lead role while Willem Dafoe, Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan took on supporting parts in the intense, extremely well crafted movie.

Of course, many people were also quite fond of Schrader’s First Reformed from 2018. That film won an Academy Award nomination for its intense original script as it followed a pastor played by Ethan Hawke who uncovers some harrowing events which leads to him possibly taking his own life at the movie’s very ambiguous conclusion. Many of Schrader’s films are known for such open ended finishes to their story lines. In First Reformed, Schrader left the audience with many questions to ponder which were quite thought-provoking in nature.

If one looks back at Schrader’s earlier work which includes the horror film Cat People and the drama American Gigolo, one will see the scope of the director’s powerful visions which are masterfully conveyed on screen especially in the filmmaker’s most distinguished works. Schrader is also no stranger to controversy having written the risky for its time drama, The Last Temptation of Christ.

Schrader is a visionary and a multi-talented artist who has managed to create forceful characters and vivid story lines which have always been taken seriously by film critics who usually adore his work. It’s an appropriate honor for this terrific filmmaker to receive the Golden Lion which is one of the most prestigious awards one can receive for a film career.
