COUP DE CHANCE (2023): Woody Allen’s Latest Gets Overwhelmingly Positive Response at Venice Film Festival

Woody Allen Movie Could Revive the Director’s Fading Star

Woody Allen’s new film, Coup de chance, has been rewarded with much positive buzz, not the least of which is a five-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.

Don’t count Woody Allen out of the game just yet. His latest picture, Coup de chance, has received some of the director’s best reviews in years. Lou de Laâge, Melvil Poupaud and Niels Schneider star in the movie which has a small ensemble cast but this time out, Allen made the movie abroad without the assistance of big Hollywood stars. Allen has stated that he would love to be welcomed back to his New York hometown to make another movie. The director has been the target of controversy which has surrounded him even though the filmmaker was never found guilty of wrongdoings.

Allen likes to make films his own way which meant, in the past, that he usually got financial backing and didn’t have too much interference from said backers regarding the production of his film. If those circumstances could repeat themselves, Allen would almost certainly make another American movie.

Coup de chance will open in France on September 27th and it’s about a couple in Paris whose marriage becomes disrupted when the woman in the relationship (de Laâge) reconnects with an old high school classmate (Schneider) and starts seeing him again. It’s a movie about crime as well and may be more interesting to viewers if one doesn’t read the plot details in the mostly positive reviews. This film also received an impressive standing ovation of five-minutes in length after it screened recently at the Venice Film Festival.

While Allen was admittedly at the top of his game in the 1970’s and 80’s, his star continued to shine bright all the way through to the early 2010’s when he made films which won him and one of his cast members (Cate Blanchett) Oscars. Those movies were Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine, respectively. In the latter part of the 2010’s, he was found to be a controversial figure again when Dylan Farrow came back into the picture with her accusations against him.

One can only wonder if Coup de chance‘s positive reception will lead to Oscar nomination buzz and, perhaps, an eventual nod or two. Allen’s movies are impossible to ignore and it will be seen if his latest could land Allen a nod in the Best Screenplay category as he both wrote and directed the new film as per usual. The Guardian was one of several sources that praised the movie which currently stands with an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That rating could help him land a ticket to the Academy Awards for his script but it’s unlikely to get his film many other nods. Still, it’s a welcome accomplishment for the director to receive positive reviews after Rifkin’s Festival landed with a resounding thud in the States just a year and a half back.
