Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, the creator of the superhero/police procedural comic book series, will produce the series.

Showrunner and executive producer Charles Huston spoke with USA Today about the unique concept of the show and how he’s bringing the comic book to live. “It’s such a clever concept to try and imagine a real world where you actually have to deal with powers and how they impact society, and to do that through the lens of a cop drama,” Huston said. “Like with all genre stuff, it’s a chance to work out (stuff) that you’re curious about and interested in the real world and then put it into a form that is larger than life.”

Bendis is involved with the project and said that he’s hoping that the show will be different from the comics but will carry the same soul. “My dream was for the show and the books to almost run in parallel universes as they explore the same themes,” Bendis explained, before saying that they’re pulling all the stops. “We’re getting the best of both worlds. We’re getting a network-budgeted show, and we’re getting to dive in as dark and deep as we want to go.”

Powers follow two detectives who work for a division that investigates superhero-related crimes. The series ran in 2000 under Image Comics before moving to Marvel’s Icon imprint in 2004. The show was also suppose to release in FX with a pilot already shot but went through reshoots before Sony Playstation Network picked up the series back in March 19, 2014.

Charles Huston wrote the first episode with 24 and Falling Skies writer Remi Aubuchon. Hannibal and Breaking Bad director David Slade will direct the first two episodes with the 10-episode series releasing this December on the Playstation Network.
