Warner Bros. has released the second movie trailer for Ready Player One (2018). This trailer gives the scope of the film, its backstory, villain, and the “revolution” that springs up inside the OASIS. It’s the last part that I take issue with. I’ve read the book on which this film is based and I wouldn’t characterize what happens inside the OASIS as a revolution. (Spoiler Begin) In one part of the book, there is a call to arms for gunters across OASIS (Spoiler End) but I wouldn’t call that a revolution.

It would seem that a lot has changed within the book-to-film translation to make the storyline more cinematic. The story in the book and the film are large in scope but the film version aggrandizes that narrative even further.

The other elements in this trailer, the look of the avatars, the modern video game references, etc., are the differences that were always going to happen and the additions that were inevitable. I personally wish that the screenplay’s writers had stuck more to source material. The film would have been far more unique and singular that way.

The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines–puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win–and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.”

Steven Spielberg‘s Ready Player One stars Hannah John-Kamen, T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Tye Sheridan, Simon Pegg, Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Kae Alexander, Ralph Ineson, Julia Nickson, Letitia Wright, Armani Jackson, Kiera Bell, and Jacob Bertrand.

Ready Player One‘s screenplay was written by Ernest Cline, Zak Penn, and Eric Eason.
