Sally Field to Star in a Movie About an Octopus

Sally Field, a two-time Oscar winning actress is set to star in a film adaptation of the highly acclaimed book, Remarkably Bright Creatures, for Netflix.

Shelby Van Pelt’s popular book, Remarkably Bright Creatures, will soon become a film for the popular streamer, Netflix, and Oscar-winner Sally Field has been tapped to play the leading role in the forthcoming picture. Field needs no introduction. She is one of the all-time great actresses and she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her heartfelt work in the 2012 Steven Spielberg hit, Lincoln where she played opposite Daniel Day-Lewis. But, she didn’t win most likely due to the fact that she already has two Oscars under her belt for work she did as a leading actress.

It comes as no surprise that Field has been in negotiations for a juicy lead role in Remarkably Bright Creatures, a moving drama that will feature the story of an aquarium janitor named Tova who makes friends with a large octopus named Marcellus which may just be able to help Tova discover what happened to her son thirty years ago. Talk about high-concept ideas.

Olivia Newman will direct Remarkably Bright Creatures. Newman can navigate dramatic plots with great ease judging from her previous films like the drama-heavy Where the Crawdads Sing which was a big box-office hit back in 2022. Of the book that the new Netflix movie is being based upon, Kirkus Reviews said it was “a charming, warmhearted read.” Expect the film to navigate similar waters under Newman’s accomplished direction.

Over the years, Sally Field appeared in many diverse films such as Mrs. Doubtfire and the box-office blockbuster, Forrest Gump. She won her Oscars for Best Actress for Norma Rae and Places in the Heart but her work in Lincoln may be her most nuanced performance to date. Had Field not already won twice, she would have been assured the Academy Award for her work in Lincoln.

Just because Remarkably Bright Creatures is coming to Netflix one day in the not-too-distant future, it does not rule out the possibility of another Academy Award nomination for the always formidable Sally Field. With the right care and if Field can do the type of delicate work she is known best for, a nomination is in reach for Field if the movie tugs on the heartstrings as successfully as the book did. When Field won her Oscar for Places in the Heart, she said, “You like me. You really like me.” No, Sally, we love you and can’t wait to see this upcoming Netflix project as long as you’re a part of it.
