ROCK THE BOAT: James Van Der Beek in Negotiations to Star in Female-Led Comedy

James Van Der Beek

James Van Der Beek Could Star in Upcoming Comedy

James Van Der Beek is slated to possibly return to movies with a part in the forthcoming girl power movie, Rock the Boat.

A new comedy featuring Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann from eOne could showcase the talents of one-time teen heartthrob James Van Der Beek. That’s right, after appearing on “Dancing with the Stars” a few years back, the actor could be returning to motion pictures. This upcoming project is called Rock the Boat and is intended to be a Netflix picture. Luke Greenfield will be directing the film which is about a group of four women who loved boy bands in the 1990’s and are invited to a reunion of their favorite boy band of their dreams known as 4Play. Set on a cruise ship, you can bet that Van Der Beek will certainly bring some prestige to the project for people who grew up watching him on “Dawson’s Creek.”

Van Der Beek is best known by movie fans for the hit film from 1999 called Varsity Blues. That film which co-starred Paul Walker earned an astonishing $52 million at the domestic box-office and an impressive “B+” CinemaScore grade. Less successful was Van Der Beek’s art house turn in 2002’s The Rules of Attraction which was based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis. That film scraped up a mere $6 million domestically and garnered some negative word of mouth. Still, Van Der Beek remains a legend to this day because of his turn as the title character from the television show, “Dawson’s Creek.” His television work has been a primary focus of his over the years as well as his family.

It is said that Van Der Beek will be playing a member of the fictitious former boy band 4Play in Rock the Boat if the movie actually casts him in the project which is a very good possibility at this point in time. Rebel Wilson, who would be his co-star in the film, played in all the Pitch Perfect movies so far as well as Jojo Rabbit and opposite Anne Hathaway in The Hustle. Leslie Mann who will also be in Rock the Boat co-starred in the hilarious Blockers and more recently in the Sundance hit, Cha Cha Real Smooth.

While Van Der Beek suffered a tremendous amount of personal tragedy during the last weeks of his appearance on “Dancing with the Stars,” the actor did phenomenally on the show and was poised to win the competition until an unfortunate series of events occurred. The actor is poised to make a major comeback with Rock the Boat which will be a lot of fun for fans of 1990’s boy bands such as The Backstreet Boys.
