Dolly Parton Poised for Movie Comeback with Film Based on Novel

Dolly Parton has made it known that she will be producing a film based on a new novel she has co-written with James Patterson called Run, Rose, Run.

News was recently revealed that Dolly Parton (Straight Talk) has signed on to produce and star in a film based on her recent book, Run, Rose, Run which she co-authored. The writers of the new book have joined forces with Hello Sunshine (Reese Witherspoon’s company) to make the upcoming picture. Reese Witherspoon was quoted as saying she admired the recently released novel and is “honored” to be helping in bringing the story to the screen.

Run, Rose, Run is about a would-be music sensation who travels to Nashville to succeed as a musical artist. In the book, this young lady hides a secret that could overshadow all that she has tried to achieve in her life. Kirkus Reviews recently reviewed the book the film will be based on. The literary reviewer for Kirkus found the novel to be “so much fun.” The critic for the book industry giant also added that it featured “fairy-tale characters.”

Parton has made a legendary career for herself in music but has had many great film appearances. Perhaps her most well-known role was in the 1980 comedy 9 to 5 where she played opposite Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman. Parton will actually be reuniting with Fonda and Tomlin for the last episode of the Netflix show, “Grace and Frankie.”

One of Parton’s most admired (by fans) roles in her movie career was actually in 1992’s Straight Talk where she played a down-on-her-luck woman who gets her own radio talk show. She played opposite the always intriguing James Woods in that picture which received an “A-” CinemaScore grade. Before that funny and romantic movie, she appeared in the 1989 box-office hit, Steel Magnolias where she starred opposite a pre-Pretty Woman Julia Roberts and an ensemble cast that included Shirley MacLaine and Sally Field. That tearjerker of a movie, naturally, scored a perfect “A” CinemaScore mark. She also appeared with Queen Latifah in 2012’s Joyful Noise, which was another crowd-pleaser that earned an “A-” CinemaScore.

Parton more recently appeared in 2020’s dramatic Netflix musical film called Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square. That picture scored a decent 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Parton played opposite some big-time performers in the holiday-themed film, including Treat Williams and Christine Baranski.

Run, Rose, Run will certainly appeal to the majority of Parton’s fan base. Why not pick up a copy of the novel at a bookstore near you today while waiting for the movie adaptation (for which no release date has been set yet)?
