A Working Girl Remake is in the Works

Selena Gomez will most likely be producing a remake of the 1988 comedy masterpiece, Working Girl, for 20th Century Studios.

God bless Selena Gomez. She is currently in final “talks” to produce a remake of a late 1980’s romantic comedy classic, Working Girl. I recently pointed out in a Twitter post of mine that the old 1988 film hasn’t really been seen too much by the modern-day audiences that I communicate with. That’s all about to change and many fans of the old picture couldn’t be happier! That’s because it’s such a timeless story of yearning for success, love and the American dream. In fact, the original movie opens with a shot of the Statue of Liberty!

Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver appeared in the original picture (which got Oscar nomination love and an “A-” CinemaScore) and we know (so far) that the remake will probably air on Hulu. That will get the story out to a large audience, for sure, and I only hope the casting is as perfect as it was in the 1988 picture which also featured a career-best performance by Joan Cusack in a supporting role.

Gomez hasn’t been resting on her laurels since winning acclaim as a serious actress in Spring Breakers back in 2013. She recently did a song and a music video with Coldplay. That romantic song (and video) was “Let Somebody Go,” and it’s absolutely terrific even by Coldplay’s high standards. Gomez is a passionate star who is putting her energy into the right project with a remake of director Mike Nichols’ Working Girl.

Carly Simon created a song for the original Working Girl called “Let the River Run” and it would be nice to see a new song capture the heartfelt complexity of the song for modern times in the remake. Maybe even one done by Gomez herself who I would love to see star in the movie. We don’t know if there will be a new song as of yet, though. In the 2004 movie, Little Black Book, the late Brittany Murphy paid homage to Simon and Working Girl with hilarious results. It’s time for more love to be shown to the 1988 movie and the remake is the perfect way to do it.

What we also know so far is that Ilana Pena will be writing the “new” script. Gomez, who plays in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” is a star of great talent and shone in the little seen Woody Allen gem, A Rainy Day in New York. It’s a wonderful thing when you see a bright star like her recognize a story that needs to be told for modern audiences and I, for one, cannot wait for this remake.
