A CG Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot film is in development

The pizza-loving, Ninjustu-trained reptilian brothers are getting another cinematic reboot – an animated one this time around, and with the help of Seth Rogen.

Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg will produce a CG Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film through their Point Grey Pictures label and Nickelodeon Animation. Jeff Rowe will direct from a script by Brendan O’Brien, and James Weaver will also produce for Point Grey. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film.

No cast nor release date have been announced at this time, and plot details are scarce. It’s unclear if the film will be a continuation of the CG series that ran for five seasons on Nickelodeon, or if it will be something new altogether. It seems it will be the latter, as ViacomCBS’ president of Kids & Family Entertainment Brian Robbins says Point Grey’s production will be a “next-level reinvention of the property”.

Many news reports are also claiming that this will be Nickelodeon Animation’s first CG theatrical film. That could possibly be shorthand for first CG in-house production, as Nickelodeon has theatrically released other CG films since 2001.

In terms of franchise history, this will be the second animated theatrical film featuring the Turtles. The first was 2007’s TMNT, produced by Imagi Animation Studios and released by Warner Bros.

ViacomCBS bought the rights to the TMNT franchise back in 2009, and since then have produced two Nickelodeon television series based on the property – one in CG and one that is traditionally animated, entitled Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Two live-action TMNT films have also been released under the Nickelodeon Movies banner. The first of the live-action adaptations, 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is Nickelodeon Movies’ highest-grossing title to date with $493M worldwide. A traditionally-animated feature film based on the Rise series is also in development between Nickelodeon and Netflix.
