In a comic book which premiered in 1984, four pizza-loving giant male turtles with the names of famous Renaissance artists won the hearts of America. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael were the turtles who were trained in the martial arts by Master Splinter, an oversized mutant rat. Their arch-enemy was the evil Shredder who they had to defeat to save civilization as we know it.

In 1990, the first film version of the popular comic book was released and was a bona-fide box office success. With hit television shows, video games and movies under their belts, the pizza eating turtles were an instant pop culture phenomenon.

Seth Rogen is breathing new life in to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise which his upcoming Nickelodeon film. The franchise has run hot and cold at the box-office over the years as the last attempt to re-vitalize the characters fell short at the box-office. That film was from Michael Bay: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. It was released in 2016 as a sequel to a 2014 film which itself was a reboot. It starred Megan Fox who played reporter April O’Neil. It grossed a slightly disappointing $82 million domestically on a $135 million budget.

Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures is behind the new franchise update. Frequent Rogen collaborator Brendan O’Brien will be writing the new script. Jeff Rowe will direct the movie which is being distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Rogen recently unveiled on Twitter a fun doodle done on a piece of paper by a young “Leonardo.” This creative page from Leonardo’s “notebook” gives insights in to the characters of the franchise and the turtles’ weapons, namely Leo’s sword.

These TMNT reboots can be quite tricky. Although they showcase the old school ninja turtles to a new audience, they also sometimes feel a little too familiar especially for parents who grew up on the characters and are now taking their kids to these movies.

Seth Rogen is always intriguing, though, and his take on the characters may just have the requisite edge to bring these ninja turtles back to life. Will Rogen have the magic touch to re-vitalize the franchise? In a couple more summers, we’ll surely find out!
