Gyllenhaal is set to star in The Guilty with Fuqua directing, based on the Danish drama Den Skyldige, which first debuted at Sundance in 2018. Netflix pounced on The Guilty within a week of it being brought to the marketplace, as the streaming giant has recently been aggressively buying up new projects, including Kornél Mundruczó‘s Pieces of a Woman; Halle Berry‘s Bruised; and Sam Levinson‘s Malcolm and Marie, starring Zendaya and John David Washington at $10, $20, and $30 million respectively. The Guilty is expected to begin production before the end of the year.

Set over the course of a single morning, the story follows Gyllenhaal as a 911 dispatch operator who tries to save a caller in terrible danger. But he soon learns that there’s more to the situation than meets the eye.

Gyllenhaal is set to produce along with his partner Riva Marker from Nine Stories, as well as Fuqua and Kat Samick through his Fuqua Films label. Scott Greenberg, Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, David Litvak and Svetlana Metkina will co-produce for Bold Films joined by Amet’s David Haring. Annie Marter, Möller and Lina Flint are set to executive produce with Christian Mercuri and Jon Oakes.

Fuqua will direct before joining Will Smith on the upcoming drama Emancipation, which Apple TV+ picked up at Cannes. Gyllenhaal just got off of his role as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home; and he serves as an executive producer on Good Joe Bell, another film starring Mark Wahlberg that was acquired by Solstice Studios after its premiere at Toronto.

Gyllenhaal and Fuqua first worked together on the 2015 drama Southpaw. Gyllenhaal commented, “I couldn’t be more excited to work with Antoine again. Our time together on Southpaw was one of the great artistic experiences of my career, and I cannot wait to be back on set with him again. The Guilty is a special story, and one that we all feel very close to.”

Gyllenhaal is represented by WME and Goodman Genow’s Carlos Goodman, while Fuqua is with LBI Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham’s Matt Johnson and Brian Lazarus.
