THE KILLER (2023): David Fincher Film Added to New York Film Festival’s Spotlight Selection

Michael Fassbender The Killer

The Killer to Screen at The New York Film Festival

David Fincher‘s latest drama, The Killer, will screen at the New York Film Festival in a “spotlight” position at the event.

Michael Fassbender plays an assassin in the Netflix drama directed by David Fincher, The Killer. This film will be shown as a spotlight selection at the Paris Theater in New York City during this year’s New York Film Festival. Fincher’s latest movie is no stranger to film festivals, having played recently in Venice. This picture will go on to play on Netflix starting on November 10th.

Fincher’s last Netflix feature film, 2020’s Mank, found itself as an Oscar contender and, now, some insiders believe that Fassbender could stand a chance at a nomination although with fierce competition such as Oppenheimer‘s Cillian Murphy, getting into that Best Actor race could prove to be rather difficult. It may depend on how well the film is received and how much publicity Netflix gives it. Fincher is always a favorite by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a Best Director Oscar nomination so it’s anybody’s guess whether or not Fincher will find his name called as a nominee next year.

The Killer will be shown on October 14th at the Paris Theater. Fassbender plays a killer who gets in over his head after a gig goes awry. The last time Fincher teamed up with scriptwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, it resulted in a $100 million box-office hit, Seven, back in 1995. Could The Killer duplicate that film’s success on the streaming end of the business? Time will tell. Fincher certainly has a huge following and Tilda Swinton co-stars in the movie giving it some major curiosity factor for independent movie fans. Fans of Fincher’s Fight Club will likely find joy in seeing Fincher return to his darker side after the mostly action-free dramatic film, Mank.

Other movies in the spotlight section of the NYFF are Maestro starring Bradley Cooper Hit Man with Glen Powell, and Foe which features Saoirse Ronan and recent Oscar nominee Paul Mescal. The spotlight section will be interesting to keep an eye on to see some great performances that could be remembered come Oscar time.

Priscilla, directed by Sofia Coppola, is the movie screening at the NYFF which will likely be the most honored movie at next year’s Academy Awards. That film has tremendous buzz and is actually the centerpiece of the festival. The 61st New York Film Festival will end October 15th making The Killer one of the later pictures which will be screening at the prestigious event.
