THE ODYSSEY (2026): The Revealed Running Time of Christopher Nolan's Epic Film is Just an Approximation

Running Time of The Odyssey Has Been Approximated

Christopher Nolan has revealed the running-time of his epic film, The Odyssey, and has declared that the film is shorter than his last film, Oppenheimer.

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s upcoming tentpole epic film, The Odyssey, is going to be a lengthy event, but won’t quite match the three-hour running time of the director’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. 2 million feet of film was used to capture the magic of Homer’s classic tale and translate it to the silver screen, but Nolan is picking and choosing what to leave in the final cut of his Oscar-bait project and what to axe on the cutting room floor.

On July 17th, The Odyssey will be revealed to the world as imagined by Nolan. IMAX prints will make up a portion of the film’s box-office returns and theaters showing those prints will be in high demand on opening weekend. Nolan believes he has crafted the best film that he could with the very big budget he has employed to tell his tale. His superlative casting choices include stars like Matt Damon (who plays Odysseus), Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya (The Drama).

The Odyssey is essentially about Odysseus’s eventful journey home to his wife Penelope (Hathaway) following the perils of the Trojan War. Studied in many humanities English classes, The Odyssey is a timeless tale of adventure and bravery. Could this project yield Damon an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and one for Nolan for his direction? It seems very likely on both counts, given the scope of this hugely ambitious project.

That “exact” running time for The Odyssey still remains a bit uncertain at this present juncture. Will the film be 2 hours and 49 minutes, 2 hours and 17 minutes or somewhere in-between? Nolan says the film is “shorter” than Oppenheimer and the use of the word “shorter” should imply that the new film runs at least ten minutes under the length of Oppenheimer.

Christopher Nolan’s movie has already begun selling tickets online to the showings in mid-July several months ahead of the film’s official release. This is the definitive Oscar-worthy film that movie studios (in this case, Universal) hope will get people packed into theaters this summer. Many people are predicting The Odyssey to top $200 million at the domestic box-office in its first several days of play alone. With a running time of “under three hours,” it will be a good way to cool off in the a/c on a hot summer day and enjoy a large popcorn and icy Coke. On that particular regard, let’s get back to the film, itself. Expect technical Oscar nods all around for this tentpole extravaganza come Academy Award nomination time.
