Pedro Almodóvar‘s latest film, The Room Next Door, will screen at the 62nd New York Film Festival as its centerpiece attraction.

Pedro Almodóvar is back with a film, The Room Next Door, which showcases an amazing cast. It is set to be the centerpiece of the upcoming New York Film Festival. This is Almodovar’s first English language movie and features two great actresses in the leading roles- Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. It also stars the always formidable John Turturro (Fearless).

Almodóvar’s latest film is being distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. Most of the director’s noteworthy films of late, if not all of them, have come from the prestigious studio, including Volver, Broken Embraces and Parallel Mothers. This new picture will be shown at Alice Tully Hall on October 4th and many audiences are highly anticipating another masterwork from the renowned filmmaker.

This picture is about writers. One, a best seller writer (Moore) and the other, a war journalist (Swinton). Their lives take an intriguing turn as the film’s plot develops. It is a female-centered movie which is no surprise given that Pedro Almodóvar’s movies usually star his female muse (Penelope Cruz). This time, the picture takes flight in New York which gives it a unique vibe that differentiates itself from most of the director’s other movies.

There is one scene in the upcoming film where characters actually see a movie at Alice Tully Hall which makes for some fun irony. This forthcoming picture is poised to be an Oscar contender in several categories. Last year, the New York Film Festival had gems like May December (which also starred Julianne Moore) and Maestro. This year, it’s The Room Next Door which could get the most accolades out of the films shown at the film festival.

Pedro Almodóvar has been doing original films that serve as curiosity pieces for years. His earlier films like Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! were provocative and even his most recent ones don’t stray too far from being truly deep, thought-provoking and challenging motion pictures. The filmmaker has worked with Antonio Banderas on several occasions as well, most notably on The Skin I Live In and Pain and Glory. One can almost imagine the director’s name being among the top five directors to be announced as nominees at next year’s Academy Awards ceremony. The New York Film Festival will offer several high-profile pictures this year but this one has, perhaps, generated the most buzz thus far.
