Great Performances Snubbed by the Critics Choice Association in a Banner Year For Films

The Room Next Door Gets Snubbed in Record Year for Quality Movies

Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton and their masterful work of art, The Room Next Door, were all snubbed by the Critics Choice Association which voted for great films this year but left many fine movies out of the equation altogether as well.

When Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore were both placed for consideration as contenders in the Best (lead) Actress category, it opened up a can of worms that resulted in neither actress receiving a nomination for their powerful work in The Room Next Door. But even though their film crashed and burned with the CCA, even a great film which picked up several nods from the Critics Choice Association like The Brutalist failed to lead its great co-star, Felicity Jones, to a Best Supporting Actress nomination. There were notable snubs this year that could help pave the way to successful predictions for the next Oscar nominations.

This is an unpredictable awards race in many respects but it’s also a bit disappointing to some people thus far. Moore and Swinton were phenomenal in their previously named picture which will soon be released. Perhaps, the studio of the movie will need to campaign one of them for Best Supporting Actress to give either of them a chance at making it into the Oscar race. Isabella Rossellini is one of our greatest stars and it was nice to see her earn a Best Supporting Actress nod from the Critics Choice Association for her work in the multi-nominated Conclave. However, I feel many critics are finally recognizing Rossellini after many years of ignoring her. Rossellini’s screen time in Conclave is limited and I think switching Swinton or Moore to the supporting category could greatly improve their Oscar chances and help one of them compete with Rossellini even though someone else could end up winning the Academy Award any way.

Amy Adams had started picking up a bit of traction for her work in Nightbitch but the Critics Choice Association gave her performance in that controversial film the cold shoulder with their nomination announcement and lack of her inclusion in their list of Best Actress candidates. June Squibb’s Oscar hopes have dwindled a bit as well for her work in Thelma due to her failure to receive a Critics Choice nod for Best Actress.

I’m still scratching my head as to how the musical score for Young Woman and the Sea failed to yield a nomination and how George MacKay made no appearance in the Best Supporting Actor category for his turn in The Beast but those two choices were highly personal and those films were barely seen. Good luck trying to find a place for another of my favorites from the year, Coup de Chance, anywhere in this list of nominees. Felicity Jones was remarkable in The Brutalist and her film was seen, though, making her snub a big disappointment.

Originally, I thought John Turturro could have snuck into the Best Supporting Actor category for The Room Next Door but the film was snubbed in every way by the Critics Choice. Lesley Manville didn’t get any love for her supporting work in Queer though Daniel Craig received a Best Actor nomination for his tremendous performance in the movie. Saoirse Ronan added another slighting to her recent list and didn’t get any love from the Critics Choice for The Outrun. She appeared in Blitz too and the two roles cancelled each other out, leaving her empty-handed.

The Substance, Wicked: Part 1, Anora and Emilia Pérez alongside Conclave, A Complete Unknown, Sing Sing, Dune: Part Two, The Brutalist and Nickel Boys received much love from the Critics Choice and did rather well with their nominations overall. Those were the films nominated for Best Picture and much of the acting choices came from those films. Hugh Grant for Heretic, Denzel Washington for Gladiator II, Angelina Jolie for Maria and likely Oscar winners Marianne Jean-Baptist (Hard Truths) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) were acting nominees for films that didn’t make the cut for Best Picture. A Real Pain was, however, picked as a contender for Best Comedy. The “hard truths” about this year’s award race include the fact that it’s “a real pain” to narrow down the many great films the year had to offer to just a handful. Fun fact: one of my favorite turns in Anora was that of Karren Karagulian. I hope he has a shot at an Oscar nomination despite his lack of love in preliminary awards circles. People are actually seeing that film, after all.
