Academy Award Predictions and Hopefuls for Nominations in a Very Competitive Year in Film

Angelina Jolie May Get an Oscar Nod for Maria

Tomorrow, the Oscar nominations will be announced and we have some predictions and hopefuls as to who and what we think (and hope) will make the cut tomorrow morning.

There are some movies we all know will get nominated for Best Picture tomorrow and some that have a slightly more uphill battle ahead of them. Emilia Pérez and Wicked: Part 1 are both assured nods for Best Picture. With a recent controversy regarding the use of AI, The Brutalist will still most likely receive a nomination for the Best Picture of the Year as well. Ditto for Conclave. But what about the less obvious choices we hope to see recognized? Could Anora and director Sean Baker miss out on nods given that film’s risque nature? Will Karren Karagulian be snubbed for Best Supporting Actor in Anora? We sure hope not in those particular cases.

There is a cast in The Brutalist that certainly deserves to be recognized despite any reservations one may have for the film itself. Guy Pearce definitely deserves to be named alongside Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) as a Best Supporting Actor candidate. Felicity Jones was brilliant in The Brutalist and deserves to be mentioned alongside Ariana Grande (Wicked: Part 1) and Zoe Saldana (Emilia Pérez) on the Best Supporting Actress nominees list. Luckily, there’s very little chance the star of The Brutalist, Adrien Brody, will be snubbed for Best Actor. In fact, he is a front-runner to win.

Coralie Fargeat is a big name most of us hope to see nominated for Best Director for her work on The Substance but will it happen given the fact that it’s a true horror picture? Will Demi Moore secure a nod for her performance in Fargeat’s movie? There’s a definite possibility that she will. Could Hugh Grant or Daniel Craig secure the final slot on the Best Actor list of nominees given that their films, Heretic and Queer, divided audiences this past year, though?

While A Complete Unknown is expected to be named in many categories tomorrow morning, could Elle Fanning sneak in the race for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the film? Juror #2 is our #1 call for a movie deserving of a Best Picture nod as it was one of filmmaker Clint Eastwood’s most accomplished recent pictures. However, everyone who saw Maria may be rooting for Angelina Jolie’s name to be called as a Best Actress candidate. There’s a 50/50 shot she’ll get in and I certainly hope the odds are forever in Jolie’s favor this year.

Other nominations we’d love to see include Nickel Boys for Best Picture and Young Woman and the Sea for Best Original Score. Tune in tomorrow for a recap of the surprise (and not so surprising) nominations when they are officially announced.
