Golden Globe Nods Offer Plenty of Surprises

Kate Winslet and Pamela Anderson were among the surprise nominees at the Golden Globe nomination announcements which were unveiled this morning.

The Golden Globe film nominations have snubbed Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown) and Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), not to mention director Jon M. Chu (Wicked: Part 1). Nevertheless, there were some satisfying nomination announcements this morning regarding who ended up actually getting a nod from the organization formerly known as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

In the Best Musical/Comedy category, there were some great surprises! The Substance received a nomination for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and its stars, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley got nods in their respective categories of Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) and Best Supporting Actress (any motion picture). Emilia PĂ©rez didn’t disappoint either with a few nods in the aforementioned Musical or Comedy category, including one for Best Picture and another for Best Director (Jacques Audiard) of any motion picture. However, the director of the terrific over-the-top horror film, The Substance, Coralie Fargeat’s inclusion in the Best Director category was the nod that put a smile on many people’s faces this morning.

Poor Saoirse Ronan never stood a chance in a field that included Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Kate Winslet (Lee), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door) and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). However, Ronan may get some love from SAG or the Oscars if things take a twist in this awards season race. With the likes of Best Comedy or Musical Golden Globe nominated actresses like Mikey Madison (of the Best Picture musical or comedy nominee Anora) and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: Part 1), Ronan will have to fight tooth and nail to get that Oscar nod. However, Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s lack of inclusion in the Golden Globe race is a fluke- she will definitely get an Academy Award nomination.

Nickel Boys continued to do well, scoring a Best Picture (Drama) nod at the Golden Globe nominations this morning. Ditto The Brutalist which was honored accordingly in major categories like Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Actor (Drama) for Adrien Brody and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce) and Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones). Best Picture (Drama) nominees also included: A Complete Unknown, September 5,  Conclave and Dune: Part Two.

Kieran Culkin continued to dominate the year-end Best Supporting Actor accolades with a Golden Globe nod for the moving and funny film, A Real Pain, which got a Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) nomination alongside other contenders like Anora, Challengers, Emilia Pérez, Wicked: Part 1, and The Substance , as previously stated.

Flow added to its list of accolades as well with a nomination for Best Animated Motion Picture where it competes with Memoir of a Snail and The Wild Robot which are its two greatest competitors. Gladiator II got nods for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and for Best Supporting Actor (Denzel Washington).

Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine and Twisters were also among the movies that got the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement recognition. Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong were recognized with nominations for the provocative Donald Trump movie, The Apprentice. Hugh Grant scored a nod for his terrific turn in the underappreciated tale of terror, Heretic. Hans Zimmer also got a nod, one for Best Original Score for Dune: Part Two though he cannot get an Oscar nomination for that score for reasons that boggle the mind.
