Mikey Madison of ANORA Among Those Honored with Wins from the Los Angeles Film Critics

Mikey Madison Plus Co Anora

Mikey Madison Takes Best Lead Performance from L.A. Film Critics

The L.A. Film Critics Association has made their choices regarding their selections for the best in the year of 2024 films.

The L.A. Film Critics named Anora the best picture of the year and The Brutalist as runner-up. Mohammad Rasoulof won the best director for his daring and brilliant work on The Seed of the Sacred Fig. That film took runner-up for best film not in the English language. For Anora, Sean Baker was named best director runner-up. The star of Anora, Mikey Madison, not surprisingly, won a best lead acting honor while another Oscar favorite-to-win, Kieran Culkin took a best supporting actor accolade from the LAFCA for A Real Pain.

In a surprise development, the L.A. Film Critics named two men as the best supporting performances of 2024 and two women for the best leading performances of the year in the organization’s gender neutral acting categories. The runners up in both categories were also of the same sex in their respective category. That was something of a shocker.

It was no surprise, however, that shoo-ins for Best Actress Oscar nominations, Mikey Madison and Marianne Jean-Baptiste, took the Best Leading Performance honors from the L.A. Film Critics for their work in the films, Anora and Hard Truths, respectively. They are probably the two most well-reviewed turns of the year. If a male had taken one of the lead acting wins, it probably would have been Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) or Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) but let’s not talk about what could have been. Let’s focus on what actually happened. The runners up for the best lead performance were: Demi Moore (for The Substance) and Fernanda Torres (for I’m Still Here).

The best supporting performers who won honors from the L.A. Film Critics were Kieran Culkin (of Best Screenplay winner from the LAFCA, A Real Pain) and Yura Borisov (of the runner-up for best screenplay, Anora). Culkin is racking up accolades this awards season and is the favorite to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing) and Adam Pearson (A Different Man) received best supporting performance runner-up honors from the L.A. Film Critics.

Flow won the best animated film from the L.A. Film Critics proving people seem to prefer that one to Memoir of a Snail these days. Nickel Boys (which won best cinematography from the LAFCA) and September 5 shared honors for Best editing. The Brutalist (which was runner-up for best cinematography) took Best Production Design with Blitz serving as runner-up. Challengers won best music score. All We Imagine as Light was named the best international film.
