WICKED Takes the Golden Globe for Cinematic & Box-Office Achievement

Wicked Wins Cinematic & Box-Office Achievement Golden Globe
Tonight’s Golden Globe awards have proven to have some big surprises and Wicked: Part 1 has won the Globe for Cinematic & Box-Office Achievement.
What a wonderful night of surprises the Golden Globes turned out to be. It started out with the favored-to-win Ariana Grande losing Best Supporting Actress for Wicked in favor of Zoe Saldana for Emilia Pérez and Kieran Culkin securing his Oscar path with a win for Best Supporting Actor in A Real Pain. Then, the leading categories in “Musical or Comedy” hit. Cynthia Erivo lost Best Actress for Wicked to Demi Moore of The Substance. Moore proceeded to give an emotional speech that specified how she was once thought to be a “popcorn” actress. She is now an award-winning actress proving her naysayers wrong. Sebastian Stan won the Best Actor Golden Globe for his turn in A Different Man. Wicked jumped back on top, though, with a win for Cinematic & Box-Office Achievement in which its director Jon M. Chu spoke about the success of his wildly “popular” film.
Moore’s win was something of a shocker because The Substance is a horror film (veiled as a comedy by its placement at the ceremony). Hugh Grant lost for another horror film disguised as a comedy, Heretic, to Stan in a turn of events that was pretty much anticipated.
Best Director went to Brady Corbet for his riveting film, The Brutalist. Emilia Pérez won Best International Film (movie in a language other than English). Flow took the award for Best Animated Feature and Challengers won Best Original Score.
Where does this leave Wicked tonight? We shall soon see. It may take home Best Comedy or Musical this evening but, then again, the Globes may have already given the movie its honors with the Cinematic & Box-Office Achievement award and its nomination. As far as the Oscars are concerned, Wicked feels like another Titanic as a can’t miss contender but it all depends on the next few weeks. It could win the Oscar for Best Picture but there are many other pictures that will fight tooth and nail to get the coveted Best Picture Academy Award.
I like Moore’s chances for an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for The Substance more now than I did previously. The Wild Robot‘s loss to Flow for Best Animated Feature Film hurts its chances with Flow likely to take the Oscar in that respective category. Stan may sneak into the Oscar race but it’s still a big hurdle for him at this point. We will have to see if he picks up traction with this Golden Globe win. In the meantime, Wicked is going to be the most “popular” choice for the Academy Award for Best Picture for now.
