Adrien Brody Takes Home Best Actor at Critics Choice Awards

Adrien Brody Wins Critics Choice Award for The Brutalist
Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his terrific work in The Brutalist at tonight’s Critics Choice Awards.
Adrien Brody announced he was from Queens (New York) when he took the award from the Critics Choice Assocation for his work on The Brutalist. He was competing against Ralph Fiennes from Conclave. It bodes well for Brody’s chances at winning his second Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony. He won his first for The Pianist.
Meanwhile, Sean Baker’s Anora took the Best Picture award. That was a well-deserved award for a film that had a lot of backing from film critics who loved the unique qualities found in Baker’s terrifically conceived and executed movie.
Demi Moore took the Best Actress prize for her work on The Substance. Moore shouted out her fellow nominees and she encouraged people to keep going for what they seek to achieve in life even if it hasn’t happened yet. Very good advice indeed.
Jon M. Chu took the Best Director honor from the Critics Choice for helming Wicked: Part 1 which wasn’t a huge success in some of the other categories but came back from behind to secure Chu the Best Director accolade.
Emilia Pérez won the Best International Film despite the fact that the movie has faced some controversies of late. Again, this award was decided before the problematic situations arose regarding the picture’s leading actress’s racist remarks online from years ago.
What does this all mean for the Oscars? While Moore’s win and, yes, Brody’s win will increase their chances for Oscar glory, Chu didn’t get nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards so that honor would most likely go to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist.
Anora could sneak up and surprise at the Academy Awards with a Best Picture win. Though it feels unlikely, this is a truly groundbreaking film that has truly won much acclaim from the critics’ groups. Anything can happen in the best picture race still. Wicked: Part 1 could still even win at this particular point in time.
Adrien Brody and Demi Moore are screen veterans whose work this year was truly exceptional. Moore was never a front runner in the early part of 2024 because The Substance is a horror film, but the quality of the movie has overridden all possible obstacles to get the acclaim which it has received. While Natalie Portman won Best Actress for the scary Black Swan, The Substance felt a bit bloodier than that picture, but it was almost just as good nevertheless and is certainly well deserving of its accolades for Moore’s work.
