The Great Fernanda Torres Bests Angelina Jolie in the Biggest Upset of the Night at Golden Globes

Fernanda Torres and Adrien Brody Take Lead Acting Honors at Globes
Fernanda Torres and Adrien Brody won the Best Actress and Best Actor (Drama) honors at the Golden Globes.
Angelina Jolie already won an Oscar but many had predicted her to take a Golden Globe home for her flawless lead performance in Maria. Instead, the wonderful Fernanda Torres won for her powerful turn in I’m Still Here. While both performances were great, the Globes spoke and rewarded Torres for her amazing work instead of Jolie.
Jolie’s loss puts her in a difficult situation. She may receive an Oscar nod for Maria but her win is certainly not a guarantee at this particular point in time. If Torres gets nominated, she could end up winning the Oscar too.
Adrien Brody, an Oscar-winner for The Pianist, won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a drama for his turn in The Brutalist. Many had seen this win coming unlike the win Torres just achieved. Both Torres and Brody gave emotional speeches that secured the fact that these talented performers are heartfelt and sincere in addition to being tremendously accomplished performers.
The Best Picture (Drama) was The Brutalist. Director Brady Corbet won the Globe for Best Director for the movie earlier tonight. It now seems like The Brutalist is on a definitive path to receive many accolades from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This movie has turned out to have steamrolled some serious competition this year which makes it one of the most accomplished pieces of work in recent years. Corbet spoke about his long battle to bring the film to the screen and how people didn’t support his vision. But, that vision has certainly paid off. Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones all gave truly wonderful performances that made the film truly stand out in a year of amazing motion picture cinematic events.
The Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) was Emilia Pérez. This film beat out Wicked and The Substance. While the film did score a tremendous victory tonight, it is not expected to be the Best Picture winner at the Oscars at this point. The Brutalist probably stands a better chance in that particular regard. Still, Emilia Pérez won in several categories and that cannot be ignored. It has turned out to be a major contender in a year with some truly great motion pictures. That it actually beat out Wicked for Best Picture is, perhaps, its most notable accomplishment of all. What a night it has been. The surprises were certainly plentiful, indeed.
