And the Envelope Please…Who Will Take Home an Academy Award for 2024 Films This Sunday?

Mikey Madison Mark Eydelshteyn Anora

Predictions for the 97th Academy Awards

Adrien Brody and Mikey Madison are among the performers who might be taking home Oscars at the 97th Academy Awards this Sunday.

Conan O’Brien will be hosting the Oscars Sunday and there will surely be an upset or two when considering the tremendous talent that is up for Academy Awards for their work in 2024’s films. Anora seems poised to take Best Picture, Best Director (Sean Baker) and Best Actress (Mikey Madison) honors. When I saw Anora at the New York Film Festival this past fall, at the end, I pointed out to another journalist (one from Next Best Picture) that Mikey Madison would likely be the Best Actress for the year. This journalist told me, “I can see it.” I don’t know if he’s changed his mind but I haven’t. This is the performance to beat for Best Actress, plain and simple.

Demi Moore (The Substance) or Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) could win but I was always told to trust my first instinct and that’s what I’m doing here. I just can’t see a horror movie getting the coveted Best Actress honor this year, for whatever reason and Torres was shut out of too many other award ceremonies except for the Golden Globes.

Conclave won’t win Best Picture. At least I don’t think it will. It’s too controversial and too slight at the same time. There was much more meat on Anora‘s thematic bones in my opinion. Conclave could win on its Best Screenplay nomination, however. It is certainly a unique picture and may be rewarded for its sharp observations on religion.

Despite the last minute upset by Timothée Chalamet at the SAG Awards for Best Actor (A Complete Unknown), the weight of Adrien Brody’s marvelous turn in The Brutalist seems poised to help Brody take the Best Actor Oscar right from under the younger thespian, Chalamet, who will certainly have other chances to win. True, Brody already has an Oscar but his wrenching work in The Brutalist was for the record books.

The Best Supporting categories are truly locked. Zoe Saldana will win Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez and Kieran Culkin will take home the gold for Best Supporting Actor for his work in A Real Pain. My personal choices in these categories would be Ariana Grande for Wicked: Part 1 and Guy Pearce for The Brutalist but that’s not going to happen, unfortunately.

In the Best Animated Feature category, it’s a race between The Wild Robot and Flow. Either picture could win but I’m going to say the former snaps up the trophy rather than the latter. Emilia Pérez should easily win Best International Film.

As I look at the movies this year brought us, I am reminded of all the great roles and films that came into view in cinemas in 2024. Would I love to see Demi Moore win? Of course! However, I saw The Substance and Anora on two consecutive days back in September and my gut told me, at the time, it would be Madison, not Moore, who took home the major award for Best Actress. We’ll see Sunday if trusting one’s gut works out. Feel free to share your own predictions.
