ANORA Sweeps the Oscars…Support the Theatrical Experience!!!
Anora Takes Home Best Picture, Director and Actress Oscars
Sean Baker won the Academy Award for Best Director for his great film, Anora, which also won Best Actress in a very tight year.
It happened. The best of the nominated films of this year won Best Picture – Anora. Sean Baker, the film’s winning director, spoke out on the need to respect sex workers and the beauty of the theatrical experience which has been threatened ever since the pandemic. He emphasized the need to support theaters and independent cinema. Baker wholeheartedly deserved this win. Mikey Madison took home the Best Actress award which was also well-earned.
Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his startling and genuine turn in The Brutalist. He gave the best speech of the night which was able to honor the powerful themes found in the film, his family and his career which has had ups and downs but is now at its peak once again. Madison looked lovely and was very distinguished when she received her award for Best Actress for Anora.
The best supporting categories went down as expected with Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin solidifying Oscars for their respective roles this year. It was a phenomenal year for movies and, as expected, Conclave, was rewarded for its screenplay.
There were two surprises- Flow beat The Wild Robot out for Best Animated Feature and I’m Still Here won Best International Feature Film. They were solid choices and understandable ones as well. The Substance deservedly won for Best Makeup and Hair-Styling. Demi Moore was wonderful but one must understand she wasn’t the only star of The Substance. Margaret Qualley divided time with Moore in that film while Madison pretty much was the entire movie in Anora.
I want to take this time to reiterate Sean Baker’s words. I always review the theatrical releases first and give them my utmost priority. Cinema is about the theatrical experience. Those joys of experiencing movies with others in a theater are in jeopardy so we need to prioritize supporting the theatrical experience. I think Baker’s respect for sex workers is also very commendable and brave to state out to the public.
This was one of the best Oscar shows in years. Conan O’Brien did a great job and made me spit out my water as I was drinking it on several occasions. What a superb night all around. What did you think? Did Conan cross a line when he made that joke about the second Joker film? Also, this may be one of the first times neither SAG winner in the lead categories won the Oscar. I have to research that one a little more now.
