ANORA Continues its Path to Oscar Glory with Win at the Independent Spirit Awards

Mikey Madison Anora

Anora Takes Several Victories at Independent Spirit Awards

Anora is headed into the SAG awards tomorrow night looking pretty good with its recent BAFTA win and today’s Independent Spirit Awards wins.

Mikey Madison took Best Leading Performance honors at the 40th Film Independent Spirit Awards for her powerful work in Anora. Many had thought Demi Moore would have nabbed the prize for her work in The Substance. Anora‘s director, Sean Baker, made a statement on the importance of decent pay for independent filmmakers when he took the award for Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards ceremony. Anora deservedly was named the Best Feature Film of the Year.

Kieran Culkin continued his unstoppable path to Oscar glory with another win for Best Supporting Actor for his work in A Real Pain which won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay as well. Without Culkin in the race this year, it could have been Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) who swept the supporting actor awards all season. Instead, Culkin has proven to be a performer to contend with in a role that will simply tear the viewer’s heart out. A Real Pain certainly deserved its two “Spirit” awards.

Anora is certainly on the path to winning at SAG tomorrow night and, also, seems poised for major victories at March’s Oscars ceremony. Mikey Madison has come from behind Demi Moore to secure a potential Best Actress victory. There are two reasons why. Number one, The Substance is a gory horror film and some people in the industry could shy away from it for that reason. Number two, The Substance is not all Moore’s film to carry. She shares the screen (although not literally) with Margaret Qualley. Madison carries Anora on her own with almost no help at all which may be why she’s winning the top prizes over Moore. Don’t count Moore out at SAG and at the Academy Awards but if she loses the Oscar, don’t say I didn’t say why. Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) could also upset the whole Best Actress puzzle too.

Didi took home the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and Best First Feature while the animated film, Flow, nabbed Best International Film. Nickel Boys deservedly won Best Cinematography for its groundbreaking storytelling.

Anora is going into SAG with a lot of accolades under its belt. If Demi Moore beats Mikey Madison tomorrow night, we will have a major race into Oscar night that will have viewers on pins and needles the entire telecast. While I’m predicting Madison to win both the SAG Best Actress Award and the Best Actress Oscar, anything can happen!
