AFI’s Top 10 List of Movies This Year Includes the Gem SING SING and DUNE: PART TWO Among Others

Sing Sing Makes the Cut on AFI’s Top 10 Films List

The American Film Institute (AFI) has released their list of the top films of 2024 and they include Sing Sing and, thankfully, Dune: Part Two alongside some other expected acclaimed pictures.

The American Film Institute has named its top 10 Movies and TV Shows for 2024. Artsy pieces of cinematic brilliance like Anora and The Brutalist were joined by crowd-pleasers like Wicked: Part 1, A Real Pain and the little seen masterwork, Sing Sing.

Just when things were getting scary regarding what movies are being hailed as the best of the year as the Gotham Awards chose A Different Man and Time magazine named the outrageous Babygirl its best film of the year, that Nicole Kidman picture failed to make the cut with AFI as did the obscure A Different Man. FilmBook will be posting its review of Babygirl later tonight. It also seemed that the past few days of award lists were unkind to Dune: Part Two but the extraordinary sequel did join the AFI’s top 10 which enhances its chances at some kind of potential Oscar glory.

Emilia Pérez also picked up some solid ground by appearing on AFI’s 10 best list. A Complete Unknown is also planting seeds to win some major Oscar nominations as it, too, made AFI’s list and will be an awards contender for certain at this particular point in time. Conclave also made AFI’s cut for the year’s best films and has become one of the most successful smaller movies of the year just like Anora, a wild picture which has been doing slow, but steady, business at the specialty box-office.

The Brutalist is the type of smaller movie that could ride this type of recognition it has been receiving to the Oscars. A Real Pain has also picked up a lot of traction with the recent critics’ awards which should help it along at the art house (and possibly beyond) in terms of box-office receipts.

It has been stated that Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo, will be soon be back at theaters after failing to get a big nationwide theatrical release despite its original platform release strategy that A24 had created. That originated last summer when the movie was released and, though the movie did well, a larger release never materialized.

Nickel Boys was also on the list of AFI’s top 10 movies for 2024. That powerful film is certainly going to make an impact when it is officially released although it does seem unlikely that Nickel Boys stands a significant chance against Anora or The Brutalist when it comes to figuring out what will win Best Picture at the Oscars. But, hey, you never know. The Room Next Door and Juror #2 were snubbed by AFI for the top 10 slots which dampen their Oscar prospects for the time being. As far as TV shows go, popular fare like “The Bear” and “The Penguin” predictably made the cut.
