The 2025 BAFTA Nominations Do Right by THE BRUTALIST and THE OUTRUN but Snub Others

Adrien Brody Felicity Jones The Brutalist

BAFTA Nominees Offer Many Surprises

While many movies predicted to be nominated for BAFTA long list awards like The Brutalist were, indeed, recognized, pictures like Maria and The Room Next Door were snubbed.

BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) made their long list selections and the distinguished movies, Emilia Pérez and Conclave, found themselves right at the top as many expected they would be. However, movies like Maria and The Room Next Door got shafted with no recognition from the prestigious organization. The good news was that the primary cast of The Brutalist was recognized for their work, including Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and, thankfully, Felicity Jones. Also, in a “it’s finally happening” situation, Saoirse Ronan made the list for her performance in The Outrun as did the picture’s director, Nora Fingscheidt.

With a list of 10 Best Actress mentions, there were some absurd choices like Amy Adams for Nightbitch and Marisa Abela for Back to Black in a year where Angelina Jolie was phenomenal in Maria and Fernanda Torres shined bright in I’m Still Here. While both Abela and Adams were good, they hardly deserved to be mentioned in a category of heavy-hitters like Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) and Mikey Madison (Anora). Kate Winslet slipped in the race with her turn in the admirable film, Lee. What happened to Tilda Swinton for her brave performance in The Room Next Door is something we’ll need Sherlock Holmes to help us figure out.

Best Actor had some heavy contenders like Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown and Hugh Grant for Heretic but some contenders were oddly chosen like Jude Law for Firebrand and Dev Patel for Monkey Man. Apparently, some actors got lost in the shuffle though Daniel Craig made the cut for Queer. Ralph Fiennes is up for his terrific work in Conclave.

There were some wonderful supporting actress inclusions besides Felicity Jones. Jamie Lee Curtis got a nod for The Last Showgirl, Adriana Paz got a call-out for Emilia Pérez and Emily Watson was recognized for Small Things Like These. Amazing news, indeed, but Danielle Deadwyler was unfairly left out of the equation for The  Piano Lesson.

Nickel Boys was shockingly left out of the Best Film long list. Instead, BAFTA chose to honor The Substance with a Best Film nomination, and both of that picture’s actresses, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, got accolades as well. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story got called out as a Best Documentary contender. That was well-deserved, for sure. Expect Emilia Pérez to get an even bigger boost for nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences due to the high number of categories in which it received praise from BAFTA.
