TONY: The Anthony Bourdain Biopic is on the Horizon From A24 and Two Cast Members Have Been Revealed

Roadrunner A Film About Anthony Bourdain

A24’s Anthony Bourdain Movie Gets its Lead Role Cast

Tony, the upcoming Anthony Bourdain film from A24 will start shooting this summer and has revealed who will be playing the renowned chef, Bourdain.

When the excellent documentary Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain came out in 2021, it became clear that Bourdain, who committed suicide, was a one-of-a-kind man who fascinated his fans and the many pleased audiences of the documentary. That film earned $5 million at the domestic box-office despite a pandemic plagued cinematic slump that was occurring at the time. Now, A24 has a deep dramatic film about Bourdain’s early life set to be directed by Matt Johnson in the works. Johnson may have some work ahead of him, but if the picture is done right, it could well be one of A24’s biggest critical and box-office hits.

Dominic Sessa will be starring in the forthcoming cinematic dramatization of Bourdain’s life, Tony. Sessa is best known to audiences for his work opposite Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers from a couple of years back. Sessa emerged from that movie as one of the most acclaimed young actors that year the Giamatti picture came out. Sessa was hailed as a breakout talent with charm and talent to spare and won numerous accolades for his work. Some think that if not for the competitive Best Supporting Actor category the year The Holdovers was celebrated, Sessa could have received an Oscar nod for his work in the funny and touching Giamatti movie.

Also cast in A24’s Tony is Antonio Banderas who is fresh off another critically hailed A24 hit, Babygirl, the Nicole Kidman starrer that was named Time magazine’s Best Film of 2024. Banderas played a husband whose wife cheated on him in the 2024 movie, but it is uncertain who the acclaimed Banderas will play in the upcoming Bourdain biopic. Banderas prides himself in doing great work and is possibly most well-known for his prestigious role opposite Madonna in the Broadway musical film adaptation of Evita.

Tony will detail the earlier days of the renowned chef, Bourdain’s life. It will be set during 1976 and is scheduled to go into production and start shooting this summer. Bourdain led a complex life full of intriguing details as anyone who saw the 2021 documentary knows. With A24 putting their marketing muscle behind a biopic based on Bourdain’s experiences, one can bet that the movie will probably be one of the most-talked-about pictures of the year it is eventually released in. Look for more news on this exciting A24 production as it is made available, including more casting choices for the upcoming picture.
