SCAPEGOAT: Scarlett Johansson Set to Star in Upcoming A24 Film from Ari Aster

Scarlett Johansson Teaming with Ari Aster

Scarlett Johansson has been cast in Ari Aster‘s newest movie, Scapegoat, which like most of Aster’s previous films, is an A24 release.

Ari Aster’s latest project is going to be the movie, Scapegoat, and it is set to star acclaimed actress/movie star, Scarlett Johansson. Aster’s last couple of films, Beau is Afraid and Eddington, have underwhelmed both at the box-office and with certain critics. This time, however, Aster promises to get his career back on track by bringing yet another creative project to the big screen under A24’s releasing umbrella.

Eddington had its fans despite its mixed responses from audiences. It received a “C+” CinemaScore on opening night, and only a 69% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating, but those who liked it really liked it with some people citing it as one of Aster’s best films. It only earned $10 million domestically at the box-office, though. Beau is Afraid didn’t fare so well. At three hours in length, that picture scraped up a mere $8 million at the box-office even with a post-Joker Joaquin Phoenix acting wild in it. Phoenix was also the main star of Eddington.

Johansson is one of Hollywood’s brightest actresses and filmmakers. She recently directed the fine film, Eleanor the Great and starred in the enjoyable Fly Me to the Moon a couple of summers ago. She came on to the scene with a big role in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer in 1998 and has been unstoppable ever since. From Lost in Translation to the Marvel tentpole, Black Widow, Johansson’s name has almost always been a stamp of quality on a dramatic motion picture.

This pairing of Aster and Johansson will make for a formidable combination. Though Emma Stone had a small role in Eddington, Aster’s last big movie with a female lead star was Midsommar in 2019. Johansson is the perfect actress for Aster to work with. Johansson is talented in so many ways and can most likely ably bring any of Aster’s unique ideas to life.

Aster’s first big film, Hereditary, garnered a terrible CinemaScore, “D+,” but his grades, while still low, have improved somewhat (save for Beau is Afraid which wasn’t polled). Recently, A24 found success at the box-office with their film, The Drama. That Zendaya and Robert Pattinson starrer received a “B” CinemaScore mark. That’s the type of audience approval that the forthcoming Aster film will need to be successful at the box-office.

While you wait for Scapegoat, Johansson will be starring in the new movie, Paper Tiger, in which she’ll play with Adam Driver and Miles Teller. That film will be released by Neon and will be premiering at Cannes soon. Johansson is due to win an Oscar soon considering her prolific work these days so expect one of her upcoming projects to, at the very least, score her an Academy Award nomination. She has also been cast in a new The Exorcist project, proving her range as an artist and as an actress.
