MARTY SUPREME: Oscar-Winner Gwyneth Paltrow Boards A24’s New Upcoming Ping-Pong Movie

Gwyneth Paltrow Joins Timothée Chalamet in Ping-Pong Film
Academy Award winner, Gwyneth Paltrow has come on board a new A24 film to be directed by Josh Safdie called Marty Supreme.
What’s in the box? Remember whose head was in the box in the 1995 thriller, Se7en? That’s right, it was Gwyneth Paltrow’s. The acclaimed actress went on to bigger things and had won the Oscar for Best Actress for the 1998 Best Picture winner that year, Shakespeare in Love. She picked roles with her heart rather than with her head (probably) when she chose to play in the Farrelly Brothers’ outrageously wild, Shallow Hal. Now, some time has passed. She’s had ups and downs throughout her career and she’s back in an A24 film called Marty Supreme where she’ll play opposite the talented Wonka star, Timothée Chalamet.
Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme is a ping-pong picture which is most likely very loosely based on Marty Reisman, a famous player of the sport. Safdie has co-wrote the script of the film. Safdie is the co-director of 2019’s brilliant Adam Sandler action film gem aptly titled, Uncut Gems. When Safdie was behind the camera of that one, he got recognized as a talent to keep an eye out for, alongside his brother, Benny.
Don’t think that Gwyneth Paltrow suffered too much after donning a fat suit for Shallow Hal. She went on to play in Iron Man opposite Robert Downey Jr. That film was, of course, a huge blockbuster and the rest of her career after it was pretty comfortable for her in regards to her choosing projects she found interesting. This new Safdie film is the type of quirky movie that suits her offbeat talents best like when she played with David Schwimmer in 1996’s oddball, The Pallbearer. It’s also impossible to forget Paltrow’s darker work in the 1993 oddity, Flesh and Bone where she appeared with the always intriguing Meg Ryan.
An interview that Paltrow did in 1998 for the formerly published UniverCity Magazine where I had my first big writing gig cited that Paltrow’s favorite movie at the time was There’s Something About Mary. That may have had something to do with her choosing Shallow Hal which only did about half as well as the big hit, There’s Something About Mary. Paltrow couldn’t live up to Cameron Diaz in the Farrelly Brothers land but all is well these days and this new A24 film is a curiosity piece for her fans and people who adore Timothée Chalamet. It’s hopefully going to be a good one and has appeal for mainstream movie fans already simply with its casting choices and studio.
