MARTY SUPREME: Fran Drescher Returns to the Screen with Role in Upcoming A24 Ping Pong Movie

Fran Drescher To Co-Star in Timothée Chalamet Movie
Fran Drescher has been cast in a supporting role in the upcoming A24 ping pong movie from Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme.
President of SAG-AFTRA, Fran Drescher, will be making a return to the screen with a role in the latest film from Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme. Drescher is cast opposite stars such as Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow in a movie that could certainly use the actress’ comic energy. However, the upcoming A24 ping pong picture is also a little serious as well which could show a dramatic side of Drescher that some of her fans are not familiar with. Drescher will be appearing in a new Rob Reiner sequel, Spinal Tap 2, as well.
While Fran Drescher is known for her television work like “The Nanny” and “Happily Divorced,” she has been in some films over the years and was most active in the 1990’s when she appeared in movies like Francis Ford Coppola’s Robin Williams film, Jack, and her starring role opposite Timothy Dalton in The Beautician and the Beast. When she appeared in that 1997 leading role, she was known for starting a phrase which became popular for a short while as her character sticks out her hand at one point while telling him, “Talk to the hand.” People liked the movie (it received a “B+” CinemaScore) but it only made $11 million domestically.
In Drescher’s newest movie, Marty Supreme, she will be playing a part that puts her in an A24 film opposite the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow which makes this one of Drescher’s biggest roles outside the animated Hotel Transylvania films. The new movie will be about ping pong and will be set in the 1950’s which sounds like a good fit for Drescher whose very distinct voice catapulted her to stardom in the early part of her career.
Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme‘s director, has ties to Queens, New York just like Drescher does. Safdie co-directed the excellent dramatic action picture, Uncut Gems, back in 2019. Safdie brings a lot of interesting characterizations to his movies and Drescher could be right at home working with the acclaimed director.
Drescher’s accomplishments as SAG-AFTRA president were quite notable. It’s about time that the actress returned to the silver screen and her work in the upcoming table tennis movie, Marty Supreme, is a step in the right direction to re-establishing Drescher in the film world as a noteworthy character actress. Timothée Chalamet may be the main star of Marty Supreme but all eyes will be on Drescher’s work to see if she still has what it takes to turn in unique work for her roles outside of her notable television ones.
