Twister Sequel Will Not Be Directed by Dan Trachtenberg

While a sequel to 1996’s box-office smash, Twister, called Twisters, is in the works, it will most likely not be directed by Dan Trachtenberg as some reports suggested.

After 26 years, a sequel to the 1996 smash, Twister, is finally coming into fruition. It is going to be called Twisters and, unfortunately, the acclaimed Prey filmmaker, Dan Trachtenberg, will not be directing the film as earlier reports initially stated. He hasn’t been contacted as a matter of fact. The director went on “Twitter” to confirm that he will not be a part of the sequel.

Twister was a movie that starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt and surrounded a formidable storm which wrecked havoc on anybody or anything that got in its path. That film is widely loved and received an “A-” CinemaScore at the time of its release alongside a $241 million domestic box-office gross. The film centered on extreme tornadoes which Paxton and Hunt’s characters had to confront in order to save their town.

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment will be behind this forthcoming follow-up to the 1996 original film. Warner Bros. released the original movie back in 1996, though. A director has not been attached to the new project, and theoretically, Trachtenberg could be contacted for the job but, as of now, it seems highly unlikely. The plot of Twisters will focus on Paxton and Hunt’s characters in the original film’s daughter who also chases storms for the thrill of it. It sounds like a lot of fun as per the original picture.

Helen Hunt (who won the Best Actress Oscar for a movie which was released the year right after Twister, As Good As It Gets) could return to reprise her role from the first movie but nothing is concrete as of now. Bill Paxton died in 2017 which, sadly, makes his return for the sequel impossible unless the filmmakers decide to show pictures of him (or something like that) to remember his part in the original picture. Sean Whalen from 1996’s film wants to come back for the new sequel, however.

Trachtenberg won a lot of acclaim this past summer with his Predator movie, Prey, which streamed huge viewership numbers on Hulu. He would definitely have the potential to be a major asset to Twisters even though he has admitted he is not attached to the project. Trachtenberg made the very intense film, 10 Cloverfield Lane, which proves the filmmaker knows how to sustain genuine tension and suspense on screen.

Many people are excited about the idea of a new Twister movie. The first film holds its place as one of the most successful action blockbusters of the 1990’s. As more details are revealed, we will know, exactly, who will be behind (and in front of) the camera for the upcoming project.
