TWISTERS: Universal Pictures Positions its Action Tentpole Sequel for a July 2024 Wide Release

Twister Sequel Set for July 2024 Release

In 1996, Twister sent the box-office for a twirl and, now, its sequel, Twisters, will be released more than 28 years later as it has now received an official release date.

When Warner Bros. released their action movie/smash box-office hit, Twister, little did audiences realize how long they would have to wait for a sequel. It has now been revealed that Universal Pictures will be releasing the follow-up movie, Twisters, on July 19, 2024. This news makes the sequel one of the studio’s big tentpole movies for the summer of 2024.

Since the main star of Twister, Bill Paxton, has since passed away, the sequel will probably feature an all new cast. Helen Hunt, the original movie’s other star, may make a reappearance in the follow-up picture but it’s likely that the studio will be gearing the blockbuster for younger audiences and thus have a cast to fit the demographic for summer action movies. When considering Universal’s tentpole film for 2023, Oppenheimer, Twisters almost seems to be the complete opposite. It’s a.) a sequel, b.) a special effects driven action picture and c.) it doesn’t have a proven helmer attached to it like Christopher Nolan. However, there is some news regarding who may be directing it. More on that in a bit, though.

The release of Twisters will be coming just one week before another potential smash: Marvel’s Thunderbolts. This past summer,  we saw a Marvel movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, and a long awaited movie sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, co-existing quite successfully at the box-office. There is always room for a few big movies in the summer especially in the month of July. The potential Oscar contender, Top Gun: Maverick, also proves there’s still an audience for sequels to older movies.

Lee Isaac Chung who directed 2020’s successful Minari is in negotiations to direct Twisters which would be an excellent fit for the filmmaker who received an Oscar nod for making the terrific Minari. When Academy Award nominated directors make action pictures, magic can happen so if Chung were to come onboard, it could make all the difference in just how strong Twisters could be from an artistic standpoint.

The studio behind the original Twister was Warner Bros. but the changeover to Universal could make theme park attractions come into fruition with the sequel now actually happening. The original 1996 movie revolved around a tornado which was definitely a force of nature to be reckoned with. It would make for a spectacular ride, to be sure.

Be sure to mark your calendars for July 19, 2024. Twisters will break into theaters on that date and action fans probably couldn’t be happier to see the weather become their biggest enemy in what could be a cinematic gem if Chung gets to make it.
