UNDER SIEGE: Steven Seagal 1990’s Action Movie Set To Get New Reboot

Steven Seagal Under Siege

1990’s Steven Seagal Action Picture Will Get Reboot

1992’s hit Steven Seagal action picture Under Siege will be getting the reboot treatment as a movie to stream on HBO Max.
When the Steven Seagal blockbuster movie, Under Siege, opened in 1992,  it did terrific business at the box-office and pleased both critics and movie-goers alike. The film earned an “A-” CinemaScore grade and also appeared on renowned film critic Gene Siskel’s top ten movie list of that year. It inspired a sequel which also starred Seagal and although it’s unclear if Seagal will star again, a reboot of the hit movie has been planned.

This upcoming re-working of Under Siege will be made by Warner Bros. for streaming on HBO Max. The two who brainstormed this idea are Timo Tjahjanto and Umair Aleem. Tjahjanto is an Indonesian action/horror director who made the “Safe Haven” part of the film V/H/S/2. He is going to be directing the reboot while Aleem will be penning the script. Aleem is most recently known for his work as the writer of the Netflix action picture, Kate.

The original Under Siege was the story of a heroic chef named Casey Ryback who is forced to fight a group of terrorists on a battleship. Not only is casting the hero role Seagal played going to be challenging but even more of an issue will be finding a villain to match the Tommy Lee Jones bad guy William Stranix from the 1992 picture. This role led to Jones winning an Oscar for one of his next roles which would be his work from 1993’s The Fugitive.

Under Siege earned $83 million at the domestic box-office and another $73 million internationally. It holds a 79% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating but with the enthusiastic endorsement it got from Siskel & Ebert at the time of its release (two big thumbs up), it was an automatic smash hit which has developed a great following throughout the years.

While it remains to be seen if the new picture will follow the same story line as the original, there were also some solid turns by Erika Eleniak and Gary Busey in the first movie as well. It’s anyone’s guess at this point if the movie will use the same characters or create completely new ones and simply follow the first film’s basic premise.

Nevertheless, Seagal fans have taken note of this reboot and have become excited at the prospect of seeing a re-working of the action hero Seagal’s most acclaimed movie. Be sure to keep this one on your radar.
