Warner Bros Chief Pam Abdy and Director Greta Gerwig Seem to Be Open for a Potential BARBIE Sequel

Warner Bros Chief and Greta Gerwig Not Against a Barbie Sequel

Warner Bros co-chair and CEO, Pam Abdy, would certainly love to make a sequel to Barbie and has been in contact with director Greta Gerwig.

Warner Bros had one of its most successful theatrical film runs of all-time with last summer’s hit comedy, Barbie. Though it was said to be their biggest worldwide box-office grosser, I’m not positive that the numbers have been adjusted to correspond with inflation and the exact number of ticket sales. But, still, let’s call a spade a spade. Barbie had a hugely successful run. So, it comes as little surprise that Warner Bros Chief, Pam Abdy, wouldn’t mind a sequel to the hit picture which is up for Best Picture and several other Academy Awards at tomorrow night’s Oscars ceremony.

Barbie missed out on noms for both Greta Gerwig as Best Director and Margot Robbie for Best Actress which Abdy said “hurt.” That doesn’t mean that the success created by this event film cannot be duplicated, though if the right idea comes along. Gerwig is looking for “an undertow” for the potential sequel project, however, and it will not be rushed into production as of now.

Abdy believes that Gerwig is simply “one of the best filmmakers working today.” Now, it has been reported that Gerwig has moved on to the hugely ambitious world of The Chronicles of Narnia. She’s doing these film projects for Netflix.

Barbie is still a phenomenon and, tomorrow night, the movie will not only be in competition for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), and Best Production Design but for a couple of the film’s memorable songs as well. “I’m Just Ken” has the potential to walk away with the Best Original Song Oscar. Ken, himself, Ryan Gosling will be performing it at the show, of course.

Greta Gerwig may not jump back to another Barbie movie right away even if she potentially dreams up an idea with her husband, Noah Baumbach, overnight. However, judging from Abdy’s comments, if Gerwig did have something concrete, Warner Bros would no doubt try to put it into production fast. Well, there’s a problem there, though. Gerwig’s availability seems to be taken up by the Narnia projects for now so, if it does happen, I’d say 2026 would be the earliest which it would.

Meanwhile, tomorrow night, look for the presenters and host of the Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel, to shame the Academy for not honoring either Gerwig or Robbie with Oscar nods. The only question is: Who would somebody have to get up and slap for the terrible omission of those two powerhouse talents? Just kidding. There probably won’t be any slapping tomorrow night but expect some mention of the slighting of Gerwig and Robbie at the ceremony. After that, Abdy and Gerwig will most likely continue to be in touch as ideas come into focus for a potential sequel.
