WELCOME TO DEATH ROW could be Sequel to STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

Death Row

Straight Outta Compton sequel based on Welcome to Death Row possibly in the works. Straight Outta Compton could possibly be one of the biggest surprise hits of the year. Not only did it top the domestic box-office for three weeks in a row, but now, people are debating if the movie could possibly be a contender at the Academy Awards. With all of that positive momentum, is anybody surprised that a sequel to the film is being discussed.

APA is looking into turning Welcome to Death Row, a book and documentary by S. Leigh Savidge (co-writer and co-executive producer of Straight Outta Compton), into a follow-up to the hit hip-hop biopic. The subject of the book (and presumably the film incarnation) would look into one of the most controversial moments in music history. It would look at the time periods between the late 1980s and mid 1990s, where Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur made huge solo careers for themselves and Suge Knight was the most powerful and feared man in the industry.

Even with the positive buzz around Straight Outta Compton, there is one big problem that could get in the way of making this sequel actually happen…there are no musical rights attached to the project. This is kind of a big issue, considering that they don’t have the rights to the hip-hop music for a movie that’s all about that hip-hop music. That’s like if Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks didn’t have the right to mention anything about Mary Poppins.

There has also been no word if F. Gary Gray will return to the director’s chair for this one or if any of the actors from Straight Outta Compton will reprise their roles.
