Wes Anderson’s ASTEROID CITY Can’t Overcome Jennifer Lawrence’s NO HARD FEELINGS to Score a Best Comedy Nod from the Critics Choice Association

Jennifer Lawrence No Hard Feelings

Jennifer Lawrence Film Nabs Best Comedy Nod From Critics Choice

No Hard Feelings has stunned movie fans by not only getting a recent Golden Globe nod for star, Jennifer Lawrence, but also by being nominated by the Critics Choice over Asteroid City.

Never underestimate the strength of a movie star-driven romantic comedy. Many had expected movies like Barbie, Bottoms, The Holdovers, American Fiction and Poor Things to take the first five slots for Best Comedy at the Critics Choice Award nominations. That happened, but the sixth film on the list seemed destined to be the star-studded ensemble Wes Anderson film, Asteroid City. However, it was a Jennifer Lawrence summer sex comedy that took the final spot on the list of the year’s best comedies. It was, indeed, Jennifer Lawrence’s comic vehicle, No Hard Feelings, that took that sixth position in the race for Best Comedy Movie.

Don’t count on No Hard Feelings to secure a Critics Choice victory, though. Even the laugh-out-loud funny hit, Bottoms, stands a better chance of winning although that picture certainly won’t win either. Barbie ruled the roost of nominated films, overall, with 18 Critics Choice nominations in total. Lawrence wasn’t on the Best Actress list decided by the CCA, though Lawrence recently nabbed a nod for Best Actress (comedy or musical) with the Golden Globes. Margot Robbie of Barbie did secure herself a nomination for Best Actress, as expected, from the CCA. Robbie probably won’t beat out Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) at the CCA Awards for the coveted CCA Best Actress honor, of course.

As a voting member of the CCA, I did notice that some of my favorites (Air, Past Lives, Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One, Elemental) made some of the lists for nods while movies like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers and Oppenheimer predictably scored big with many, many Critics Choice nominations divided between those pictures and, CCA darling, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

It has been a tough year for Penelope Cruz who wasn’t recognized by either the Golden Globe nominations or the CCA for her work in the fine upcoming dramatic movie, Ferrari. America Ferrera took Cruz’s predicted slot on the list of Best Supporting Actress nominees for the critically heralded colorful comedy, Barbie. I’m not complaining, but Cruz was nevertheless amazing in Ferrari.

American Fiction could be the best comedic movie of the year when the votes are calculated and the CCA makes its final choice, though Barbie seems ahead of that aforementioned picture in the standings, at least for the time being.

What was the appeal of No Hard Feelings and Lawrence’s performance in it? That movie felt fresh and original to many thanks to the risks Lawrence took in it. When considering its appeal versus Asteroid City, it feels that though Wes Anderson’s picture was also fresh and original, it was ultimately too bizarre to many critics for it to secure a nod from the Critics Choice for Best Comedy. Surprisingly enough, Anderson’s controversial film scored a nod for Best Production Design from the CCA.
