WHIPLASH (2014): Damien Chazelle’s Masterpiece To Get a 10th Anniversary Theatrical Re-Release

Whiplash Set to Return to Theaters for 10th Anniversary
Whiplash, the movie that helped launch director Damien Chazelle‘s work to the world of cinema, will re-release in theaters in September for its 10th anniversary.
On September 9th, 2014’s Oscar-nominated gem, Whiplash, will screen at the Toronto Film Festival in honor of its 10th anniversary. The groundbreaking film is set to re-release in theaters on September 20th in 4K DCP. In its original release, it only earned $13 million domestically but made $36 million internationally. Locally, people didn’t line up to see it in theaters beyond the art houses but Whiplash nevertheless proved to be a force to contend with at the Academy Awards as it won several of the Oscars it was nominated for, including one for its co-star J.K. Simmons who delivered the performance of his lifetime in his role within the acclaimed picture.
Let’s not forget the 2014 film also launched the career of Miles Teller who is now going to be in two high-profile projects that are on the horizon. One is Michael, the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic which has industry insiders excited and the other is the remake of the early 1980’s drama, An Officer and a Gentleman. Teller won over many fans for his work in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick but even before Whiplash, Teller was brilliant in films like 2013’s A24 picture, The Spectacular Now. Whiplash just cemented Teller’s presence in the land of cinema a year later.
It’s easy to get excited about the re-emergence of Whiplash on the silver screen where one can listen to the beautifully created sound mixing that makes the film one of the most intense dramas driven by music ever made. It is about a young jazz drummer (Teller)’s bond with the overwhelming teacher that J.K. Simmons played to perfection. You may say that Simmons’s instructor character challenges the young man to the point of “pushing him to the brink of (in)sanity.”
Whiplash was a Sundance Film Festival sensation. Needless to say, it won several well-deserved accolades at that particular festival and became one of the most loved movies of all-time, especially by those who were trained in the arts no matter what the discipline was.
It’s unclear just how wide Whiplash will be released but Sony Pictures Classics is going to put it out there for people to discover for the first time or rediscover. A movie like this needs to be seen (and most importantly, heard) on the big screen. It should stir up some interest being that Teller has become something of a major movie star these days. Don’t miss the opportunity to see Whiplash if it shows up playing at a theater near you.
