Zach Cregger Teases his Upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ Film: “The Movie is Going to Rip”

Fans of the immortal video game series Resident Evil will know these words spoken by the towering series villain, Nemesis, well. They are also biting their nails in anticipation of Zach Cregger’s new entry into the franchise.

Cregger quickly made a name for himself in the horror genre with his 2022 breakout hit Barbarian, and his new film Weapons (hitting theaters August 8) has only been garnering him more attention as early test screenings have come back with glowing and frightening reviews. But it’s his third film that has seemingly everyone on high alert. A Resident Evil reboot. The landmark video game franchise from Capcom already has seven live-action adaptations under its belt, but fans (and studio heads) are hoping that Cregger can inject some life and style into the series with his new adaptation.

Details are being kept under wraps, but earlier in the year, Cregger gave CinemaCon attendees some insight into the direction he wants to take his new film. “There’s a moment that comes in every moment of every Resident Evil game where you find yourself standing in the mouth of a dark passageway. One shot in the gun is left,” he said. “You know that something horrible is waiting for you in that darkness, that awful moment where you have to will yourself. That’s something that every Resident Evil game has perfected and has kept me and millions of other players returning to the series for decades.”

More recently, Cregger talked to ComicBook about his love for the franchise as a whole: “I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games.” He continued, “I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love….I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip.”

While he did go on to mention that he has not seen any of the previous films (really, not even Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil (2002) blockbuster hit?), It’s clear that his heart is deeply attached to the intellectual property and with his stock on the rise, Resident Evil fans (including myself) are chomping at the bit for Cregger’s adaptation.

Until then, filmgoers should get out to the theaters for Weapons this August as they patiently wait for the September 2026 release of Resident Evil.
