Zach Cregger’s Next Project Lands Major Deal at New Line

Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger‘s new script, Weapons, has scored the writer/director a major deal with New Line Cinema.

This past September, Barbarian proved to be a super original horror movie to contend with. Now that unique and terrifying film’s director, Zach Cregger, has just landed a multi-million dollar deal to make his next project, Weapons, at New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Barbarian was no doubt the work of a genius earning a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That film scored an impressive $40 million domestically and is currently a huge streaming success. It co-starred horror movie “king,” Justin Long in a bit of comic relief within the very scary context of the picture.

Weapons may be compared to the 1999 Paul Thomas Anderson masterpiece, Magnolia, in terms of its multi character structure. Weapons is, of course, a horror project, though, and will certainly be a bit more terrifying that the falling frogs scenario that occurred at the end of Magnolia.

Cregger will also have control of the final cut of Weapons that makes it to theaters (yes, the movie is guaranteed a theatrical release). Having the say over the finished product is, of course, depending on whether or not the test screenings are at least somewhat respectable. Cregger is actually expected to become the type of filmmaker who can regularly create horror films for New Line Cinema.

Barbarian was the frightening story of a woman (Georgina Campbell) who meets a man (Bill Skarsgard) at the Airbnb that she booked. They end up sharing a home for a bit and then the woman realizes she’s in the middle of a scary ghetto type neighborhood in the middle of nowhere. Things get more complicated when the woman returns to the home only to discover what lives beneath the house is something far more dire than what is outside. Or is it? If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s highly recommended viewing for horror fans.

Cregger made himself known to be a voice of the horror film realm with his terrific work on Barbarian and many fans are eagerly awaiting Weapons which could be considered the thinking person’s horror movie and any movie that dares to be compared to the brilliant Magnolia has got to have some substance to it for sure. New Line Cinema is paying a pretty penny for Cregger’s Weapons so be on the lookout for it as it is going to be a movie that will surely scare up some big bucks at the domestic-box office when it is released. No date has been set as of now.
