Zelda Williams Chooses WHAT DREAMS MAY COME as Her Favorite Movie of Dad Robin Williams

Zelda Williams Picks Her Favorite Movie of Dad Robin Williams

Zelda Williams, Robin Williams‘s daughter, has selected What Dreams May Come as the movie in which she is reminded of her father the most.

Robin Williams’s daughter has just made the comedy, Lisa Frankenstein. Zelda Williams directed the upcoming supernatural film and audiences are eagerly awaiting its release on February 9th from Focus Features. In the meantime, Zelda has declared that What Dreams May Come from 1998 is the movie she recognizes the most as the one closest in spirit to her dad.

What Dreams May Come, based on a Richard Matheson novel, was a well-received picture. It was the winner of the Best Visual Effects Academy Award and received glowing reviews from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. Yet, it is not as popular as movies Williams has done such as Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting or, on a lighter note, Mrs. Doubtfire.

Being that Zelda’s upcoming picture (which was penned by Diablo Cody), Lisa Frankenstein, is a supernatural movie, it seems as if Zelda is more attracted to work that isn’t grounded as much in reality. However, she believes Robin’s character in What Dreams May Come was a bit like the man himself who she called dad. Zelda stated she is a big fan of novelist Richard Matheson’s work as well.

What Dreams May Come is the story of a father who passes away and searches for his deceased wife through the afterlife as he is assisted by two guides played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Max von Sydow. I praised the film when I reviewed it for another publication years ago. However, I noted in my review that the film was a bit emotionally draining. That fact could have accounted for the movie’s less than stellar box-office performance. It only made $55 million domestically on an $85 million budget. Its CinemaScore grade was just an OK “B” but one must remember that films which deal dramatically with Heaven and hell could be a lot for audiences to take in emotionally. Of course, the 1998 movie has its fans (many of them, in fact) but it’s not a film for everyone which makes Zelda’s selection of it as her favorite film by her dad a bit surprising.

Robin Williams was mostly known for inspirational box-office hits like Patch Adams but he took big risks in movies like What Dreams May Come. Robin wasn’t afraid to take roles that went against the norm for the actor and was a stronger performer as a result. Keep your eyes open for Lisa Frankenstein when it releases late next week to see if Zelda is going to be a director to watch in the world of Hollywood! The trailer looks great.
